The manufacturer of wearable cameras for police officers Axon refuses to use image-recognition technology.
This technology is quite controversial topic, especially its use by law enforcement in the cameras that they carry. The manufacturer appealed the assessment to the independent research of the Commission, and as a result decided to refuse recognition.
In the last year, Taser has established a Board of ethics of artificial intelligence and technologies of law enforcement and a group of 11 experts has published the first conclusions about the technology. The answer is clear — in modern conditions the face detection cannot be used. Any such technology should not be customizable, otherwise it will open the opportunity for abuse. Every application to face recognition should be initiated only with the consent of the person.
In addition, there is no convincing evidence that these programs produce real benefits in the work of the police.
