Scientists at the University of Helsinki (Finland) found a mechanism that impairs the regenerative capacity of the intestine in the aging process. Lock this mechanism allows to improve the condition of the digestive system and reduce the risk of development of malignant tumors. About it reported in a press release to Medical Xpress.
In the study, the experts raised the organelles — dimensional tissue culture, which is a model of the intestine. It turned out that the stem cells over time cease to perform the update function of the intestinal tissues, with a key role in this pathological process are the cells of Paneth. The latter perform protective, antibacterial function, but with age start to secrete signal molecules that prevent regeneration.
Scientists have shown that the molecule-inhibitor, called Notum, affects the Wnt signaling pathway that regulates embryogenesis, cell differentiation and development of malignant tumors. The suppression of the Notum with drugs rejuvenated stem cells and promoted the recovery of bowel function in laboratory animals who were given chemotherapy drugs with severe side effects.
