The specialists from the Kronotsky reserve opposed the initiative of community members about the hunting of the bears in his part of the South Kamchatka reserve, the press service of the natural reserve.
It is noted that the question on necessity of regulation of number of animals living in protected natural areas of Federal significance, was raised by public figures. The need for such measures were substantiated by the cases of the release of bears in the settlements. According to the initiators, the animals in the sanctuary became so numerous that they are close in the area, and they come to human habitation. Scientists of the Kronotsky reserve such statements do not agree.
“The number of bears in the South Kamchatka zakaznik consistently high, and it is regulated in a natural way, without human intervention. It is a reference ecosystem. Animals do not associate food with humans and feed on natural feeds in fish, nuts, berries, herbs. As soon as the animal becomes larger than the capacity of the habitat, regulation of population density occurs not only by migration of young individuals, but also due to cannibalism and a loss of many adult females in reproduction”, — the press service quoted the head of the scientific Department of Kronotsky state reserve.
Experts believe that the outputs of the beasts in the settlements are not associated with the presence of nearby protected area, and the lack of a culture of recycling food waste.
“For example, in the village of Ivashka in the Koryak region a whole group of bears numbering more than 50 individuals grew up at the local landfill. And this problem is typical for the whole of Kamchatka, including the villages located at the borders of the South Kamchatka Federal sanctuary”, — reads the statement of the experts.
They recalled that the shooting of wild animals to control their numbers on specially protected natural territories is illegal. Such measures may only apply to combat any epidemic animal after agreement with the Ministry of natural resources and ecology of the Russian Federation and Federal service. Signs of dangerous diseases in animals no.
According to the aircraft records, which are held every five years, the number of population groupings bears South Kamchatka sanctuary stable. In 2012 it amounted to 943 bear, in 2017 — 990 individuals. The total number of Kamchatka population — more than 20 thousand.
