Nuclear power plant at Three Mile island officially closed, but the radioactive material will be present until the year 2078.
Important, if inglorious, the head of the U.S. nuclear power came to an end. Company Exelon stopped the reactor unit
No. 1 nuclear power plant on Three Mile island after 45 years of operation. At this station accident in 1979,
however, on another unit, that remains closed past 40 years.
The company previously adopted the decision on termination of operation of the station this year because of high operating costs. Now it will take several more decades to fully resolve and dispose of all radioactive materials. Staff will stop supplying fuel to the reactor in the next few weeks and turn it into a repository for spent fuel. It is expected that unit 2
will be closed in 2036
