The most negative impact on the environment and human health has meat. To such conclusion came the Anglo-American group of scientists after the study, the results of which were published in the journal PNAS October 28.

Scientists from the universities of Oxford and Minnesota analyzed 15 groups of food products in terms of influence on the environment and human health. In the study was taken into account that 9 of the 15 risk factors the incidence of diabetes, cancer of the digestive system, coronary heart disease and stroke are associated with low quality of food.

Scientists have introduced the index of AREI, which shows the average relative environmental impact of one serving of the product. The calculation took into account such indicators as greenhouse gas emissions, land area for production, environmental pollution during production, water demand and other negative environmental factors.

It turned out that the products associated with a low risk of mortality, — whole grains, olive oil, fruits, vegetables and nuts have the least average impact on the environment. Even less impact on the environment have drinks with a high sugar content, despite the fact that they are at risk.

Scientists have noted that increasing the consumption of foods that are harmful for humans and the environment and recommended that instead, go for cereals, fruits, vegetables or fish.

Previously, scientists from the Medical center of Vanderbilt University in the USA called products, which reduce the likelihood of developing lung cancer, and their colleagues from the Medical College of Baylor came to the conclusion that a sufficient consumption of caffeine reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and liver disease.
