Dozens of laboratories around the world are seeking to develop a vaccine against coronavirus. Several laboratories have developed a vaccine prototype that is currently tested on animals. Initial human trials will likely begin early next month, before extensive trials to test the effectiveness of vaccines and to detect possible side effects.
Any vaccine must also be approved by a regulator before it is distributed among the population, and it is expected that widespread access will not be until early next year.
Experts warn that the experiment with one subject cannot show that the treatment is working, and definitely can not prove its safety.
Chen, however, is a respected scientist who played a major role in the treatment of the SARS epidemic in China in 2002, and also assisted during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in the years 2014-2016.
Some experts believe that China may hasten the development of the vaccine without taking the necessary precautions.
