The coronavirus may be passed through the eye — say researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. According to a study published on bioRxiv, they become the target of COVID-19 due to the fact that produce a protein called ACE-2.
“Ocular surface cells, including the mucosa vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2. — explains the head of the research group Lingli Zhu — the Virus can get through them in the body, but also be transferred in this way from person to person.”
Experts studied the cases of 10 patients with a history of coronavirus, and found that in the eyes of each of them was present ACE-2 was detected in the cornea, bloodshot eyes and on the inner side of the eyelids.
At the moment, the authors of the study believe that the penetration of aerosol particles by coughing or influenza infected COVID-19 on the mucous membranes of a healthy person, it is sufficient for infection. This may also partly explain why some patients diagnosed with conjunctivitis.
“Your study, we want to reiterate how important it is to adhere to all security measures < … > to stop the spread of the virus, — is underlined in the scientific work and encourage ophthalmologists to observe special caution.”
The first theory is that the coronavirus can be transmitted through the eyes, put forward in January, when the epicenter of the pandemic was Wuhan (China). Then Dr. Wong Guangfa suggested that contracted for not wearing protective eyewear when working with patients. His colleagues also confirmed that Guangfa observed redness of the eyes during the disease.
