Hello, dear readers and DIY!
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Make Something” will share with You how to make a nice veneered box, using only one electric carpenter tools — a jig saw.
— Sheet plywood
— Veneer ebony
— Sandpaper, glue Titebond
Aerosol contact adhesive
— Abrasive sanding block
— Linseed oil, paint, flock, second adhesive
— Glossy acrylic lacquer.
The tools used by the author.
— Electric jigsaw
— Blades for electric jigsaw
— Technical Hairdryer, iron
— Gon Swenson, chisels
— The combined angular range
— Clamp, hammer, pliers, pencil, ruler, knife.
The process of making.
The first thing that makes the wizard, it picks up the correct blade for the jigsaw. There are wood blades with six teeth per inch and so on up to 20 teeth per inch. If Your jigsaw has a pendulum motion, then it should be set to zero. Then the cut will be very clean and have no chips on the edges. By trial and error, the author finds that the best quality cut is obtained when working with the blade 20 teeth per inch.
Case decorative box is made of plywood 12 mm thick. From it are cut three strips with a width of three inches.
Plywood is pressed against the workbench, and over it put another piece of plywood to use as a rip fence to cut a smooth edge. The top sheet is deployed by a factory edge to the work surface.
And in order to prevent the wandering soles of the jigsaw right and left, he propped up on the opposite side other smooth Board.
Perfect smooth edge! Now cut two pieces 10 inches long and another two cut to 4 inches long.
As the stop is very convenient to use a square Swenson, pushing it and the workpiece to a workbench clamp.
Received small the box sides still differ somewhat by size. To perfectly fit them to each other, by applying the abrasive paper 100 grit.
So, all 4 elements are ready. Now they are glued together Clem on wood Titebond, and tightened a few clamps.
In addition to all joints and even hammered a nail. So don’t have to wait until the glue completely dries.
Next, cut the bottom of the box. The author is trying to do it without using parallel blocks. If the bottom turned out a little wider or longer than the desired size, it can be easy to whittle away on the abrasive paper.
The bottom also sits on the glue and nails.
The next stage — the lid of the box. It will be almost the same size as the bottom.
It will have a small internal ledge in order that it densely entered into the edge of the box and recorded them. This takes more than a thin veneer, to about 5 mm, and cut to the desired size.
To Central fanerku is located exactly in the center of the cover, the author has resorted to using this trick: he simply puts a piece of plywood inside the box, letting it fall, then cover the box lid, pre-coat its center with glue on wood, and turns the box upside down.
For better adhesion to the top gently put the goods.
All surface boxes shall be processed an emery paper. To a sheet of paper does not move, and was easy to operate, it is glued with contact adhesive to the sheet of plywood.
Now for aesthetic purposes, the author intends to do with the bottom portion of the box shadow line. To do this, he cuts out another plate 5 mm plywood size about 10 mm less than the length and width of the bottoms.
Then for symmetry just like the plate he cut out for the top of the lid. All these elements sit on the glue.
The General form of boxes completed. The case rose to finish. In this project, the wizard will use veneer ebony. On each side it makes the seam allowance of approximately 5 mm.
Glue the tree carefully distributed over the entire surface of plywood and veneer for the most. The latter might start to curl. Don’t worry — then everything is equalized.
Before you glue the veneer, the author gives the glue some time to dry. The surface should not be sticky to the touch. To speed up the process you can use technical dryer. High temperature in this process is not necessary, suitable and conventional domestic dryer.
After that the usual iron, exposed to the maximum temperature, prepariruetsya veneer to the walls of the box.
This should slightly tilt the iron in the processing of veneer edges.
The excess veneer is trimmed carpenter’s knife, which it is advisable to install a new blade.
After trimming the excess veneer faces are sanded soft abrasive block with a fine grain.
The same procedure is done with all other parties. When exposed to temperatures all the bumps smoothed the veneer and the material is completely cleared.
Now cut a thin strip of veneer to the edges of the top parts of the box and in the same way pasted.
Joints edges neatly trimmed at an angle of 45 degrees with chisels.
Further, the author is going to make a pile lining (faux velvet) on the inner surfaces of the box. To do this, he first glues adhesive masking tape the surface of the boxes, which must not be covered by NAP.
Then a special sponge brush Dan causes the adhesive composition of red color on the inside of the box, and over it sprays red cloth.
In the same way processed and the bottom of the box.
Finale — wrapping the lids with pieces of veneer.
The author uses this krakovany cork tape for pasting the welts of the cap. For fast fixing tape shall be applied second adhesive.
And the cork sheet to the Central part.
The inner surface of the lid was also covered by the “faux velvet”.
Now all the same jigsaw, with the blade exposed at any angle, master cut the handle for the lid. Material is still the same plywood.
The handle is also glued veneer, and glued to the lid.
Then the entire product is covered with two layers of glossy acrylic varnish.
Is one and only jigsaw can do wonderful things!
