Canadian scientists have suggested that one of the first symptoms of infection by the coronavirus can be inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eye.
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the thin transparent tissue covering the eye and the posterior surface of the eyelids. It is due to eye dirt, bacteria or viruses.
In a paper published in the journal of the Canadian ophthalmological society, the researchers described the case of 29-year-old patient. In March, she was admitted to the hospital with redness of the eyes. The doctors diagnosed him with conjunctivitis, but the treatment did not give results.
Later, the doctors found that the woman had recently returned from a trip to Asia. Test for coronavirus was positive.
“She had a cough and fever so we could not from the very beginning to suspect coronavirus. We didn’t know that the infection may be manifested through the eyes, not in the lungs,” said associate Professor of ophthalmology at the University of Alberta Carlos Solarte.
It is reported that the patient suffered a disease without complications.
