According to the Creator of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin, technology zkRollup will become “the dominant paradigm for scaling at least a few years.”
According to Buterin, scaling of data will be to scale bandwidth Ethereum 2.0. It is expected that after the transition to the first phase of the Ethereum 2.0 network bandwidth will increase to 100 000 transactions per second (TPS). Implementation zkRollup in the current blockchain Ethereum can increase the capacity up to 2-3 thousand TPS.
The Ethereum as we know it today, will eventually become one of the 64 shards in Ethereum 2.0. These shards can be seen as a horizontal expansion ― they will be able to store and move more data. However, the process of increasing the overall capacity of the Ethereum 2.0 will take several years.
This “gap” will be filled zkRollup. Solutions developed on the basis of this technology, can process more transactions outside of the core Ethereum network, and then periodically add them to the blockchain.
A decentralized market Loopring already successfully uses this method of scaling, which allows it to handle much more transactions at a lower cost. Last month, a startup, Matter Labs has introduced a tool called zkSync, which is also developed on the basis of zkRollup.
