Metals added to fireworks to create vibrant colors. Red flares, for example, can be made of strontium, blue from copper.

To study the impact of these metals on the environment and humans, scientists have collected the particles formed during the combustion of ten different types of fireworks. Then these particles affect the human lung cells and mice.

As it turned out, the combustion products of fireworks can cause inflammatory reaction. A particularly strong response occurred at a firework called “Black cuckoo”: the linked sample contained approximately 40 000 and 12 000 ppm lead and copper, respectively.
