Hello, dear readers and DIY!
I’m sure many of You love to relax in the woods, on the beach or just for your summer cottage. However, with a comfortable chair so your stay is even more comfortable.
In this article Ivan, the author of the YouTube channels “HandCraft” and “Creates DIY” to tell You how he made foldable chair from scraps of plywood sheet.
This project is not very complicated to produce, and under certain simplifications can be made the minimum set of tools.
— Gas lifts (100N) for furniture
Sheet plywood 18 mm thick, boards
— Door hinges, screws on wood
— Sandpaper, PVA glue, a sealer for wood, paper, masking tape.
The tools used by the author.
— Circular saw
— An angle grinder, disc grinding head
— Screwdriver, drill bits for wood with countersink
— Self-centering drill bits, magnetic bits
— Feather drills on a tree
— Furniture stapler
— Manual mill
— A set of cutters for wood
— Keyless clamp for workbench
Lathe, of Reyer, the Meisel, hacksaw
— Electric jigsaw
— Circular saw
— Digital angle, automatic core
— Cabinet makers vise, pencil, compass, square, ruler, knife, scissors, hammer, paintbrush.
The process of making.
So, the basic material for the chair will serve as trimming the sheet of plywood thickness of 18 mm.
The author sets the rip fence of a circular saw at a distance of 25 mm from the edge of the saw blade.
After that, the plywood is cut into long strips. Of them, the wizard will glue a large panel, to produce a spectacular picture.
Although it is possible to do without this procedure, make the seat from plywood sheet.
The resulting blank is laid out slices close to each other for three long clamps. On the upper surface is applied a layer of PVA glue and spread with brush or roller.
Turn to the side straps and cinch clamps.
To the surface of the shield is not bent while gluing, the author lays on top of a couple of boards, and weight them with bricks.
Of course, much easier to glue such panels, using a special subspecies of the clamps, called vimmi.
You can make yourself acquainted with the following article.
The author should put between the boards and shield the plastic wrap, so they are not stuck. So I had to use a hammer to remove them.
On the lower part of the shield is also formed from traces of streaks of glue both surfaces, the wizard processes the grinder with sanding disc attachment.
For marking patterns, the author was required to fix a furniture staple a couple of sheets on the workbench, and glue them together with masking tape.
When marking the various angles, it is convenient to use a digital angle.
The author also wants to receive the edge of the chair slightly curved. To do this, he drives in a few places small cloves, and bends them along a metal ruler.
The result is that such a pattern designed to mate chairs, along its Central axis.
The pattern is cut along the perimeter and removes the segment from the Central part.
Attach the pattern to the finished panel, the author guides the contours of the first half.
Then the mold is flipped, the edges of the lines are combined, and outlines other half.
Excess material from the outer part is cut with an electric jigsaw.
Not to spoil the edges of the parts, and drilling holes for the entrance of the canvas of the jigsaw, the author carves out the inner straight lines with circular saws. This tool allows you to plunge the blade straight into the thick material.
In the end the wizard turned out 5 pieces for the back, seat, armrests and front legs.
Complex inner corner and outer edges are sanded with sandpaper by hand. In the end the ends it turns out to be a contrast pattern.
Now blanks are alternately fixed on a workbench with a special clamp, and all the facets are rounded with a router radius cutter with the thrust bearing.
By the way, this clamp Ivan made their own. About its production in detail in a recent article.
For the connection of structural elements need eight small door hinges. Two pairs of them will connect the seat and armrests with backrest.
To accurately mark the centers for the pilot holes, the author uses the auto-Kern. Then the holes are made by drill bit for wood with countersink. Then in its place in the lower part of the backrest are mounted on the furniture hinge.
Of course, drilling the pilot holes is much easier and more accurate, you can perform self-centering drills.
In the same way loop with a backrest bolted to the seat.
The time came to install the furniture gas shock absorbers. The author chose a model with stress in compression to 100N (10 kg).
The first thing to master blind landing drills out the holes for the head mounting of the rod. Perfect for this drill pen on wood diameter 32 mm.
The screws are marked and drilled pilot holes, and mount bolted in its place.
For installation of the fasteners shanks of the housing shock, the author had to mention the desired location and detach the seat.
Detail is recorded in a carpenter’s Vice, and the markup is hollow for mounting the end mill. The master uses the hand-mill side focus.
It remains to fasten to your seat mount and connect the backrest with the seat.
First, the master latches on the head mounting of the pistons.
Snap into place the shanks of the housing.
Gas lifts are perfectly cope with their task, lifting the backrest almost vertically.
Legs for couch, the author also decided to do it yourself, although it would fit and purchased, rubber.
He cut out several squares of plywood and glued them together.
After drying, the adhesive, the workpiece is fixed on a lathe and turned to cylindrical shape by Reier.
Rounded edges for future legs, the master gives with Meisel.
Blanks are cut with a hacksaw, and drilled holes for the screws.
It remains to tie the legs into place, after inflicting a bit of glue.
Now back connected to the rear part of the armrest hinges.
The other four loops will be connected by the front of the seat and armrests combined with the detail of the chair.
To protect the wood from moisture, the author impregnates the surface of the product with linseed oil. Of course, it is advisable to do this before Assembly, because the loops and fixing the oil will not fall.
After several hours, the excess oil is removed, and the author checks it in the work.
He also made in the upper part of the back neckline for ease of carrying.
When folded, this chair is almost flat, and easily fits in the trunk of the car.
And reveals a chair alone, you just slightly raise the back.
Thank you Ivan for the idea and implementation of simple design foldable beach chairs!
All good mood, sound health, and interesting ideas!
