Hello, dear readers and DIY!
In this article Jonathan, the author of the YouTube channel “Jonathan Katz-Moses” will show You the process of making caskets for jewelry, in this case, for engagement rings, and also will tell about the nuances.
This box is quite simple to manufacture, and can be repeated a small set of tools.
— Log hazel
Brass rod, sheet plywood
— Neodymium magnets
— Sandpaper, used a two component glue, cardboard
Two — component epoxy resin.
The tools used by the author.
— A set of cutters for wood, chisels
— Manual mill
— Miter saw
— Orbital sander
— Band saw, electric jig saw
— Spray the electrical
— Screwdriver, drill bits Forstner
— Japanese saw, the knives, mallet, hand plane
— Tape measure, pencil, carpenter’s vise, scissors.
The process of making.
The basic material for the enclosure will serve as the wood of the hazel, and for interior decoration — felt. As latches are used neodymium magnets. And for axis and element of decor will serve as a rod of brass.
The first thing the master sawed from logs of walnut are more or less equal sector.
However, he uses a miter saw by holding and rotating the log clamp.
The diameter of the disk is not enough to completely cut the log, and had to work a little handmade Japanese saw.
Then he clears away the bark with a chisel, and remove wane knives.
The knives You can make yourself acquainted with the following article.
Outer side is polished orbital machine, and faces are processed by the planer.
The author lays out the Central line on the cut wooden blanks. It is not perfectly accurate, since the shape of the saw cut is not a perfect circle.
From the edges along the Central line it lays 30 mm.
The initial holes are made so thin marking drill.
In order to put these brass rods to the inside of the tree, the craftsman drills holes with a diameter of 8 mm.
The first hole should be deep enough to accommodate the axle.
The second must pass through the cover, and bury in future case only 5 mm.
After that, the disc it is cut into two halves, one for housing and one for the cover. This operation is performed on the bandsaw.
In the Central part of the body you need to take a sample of the material.
The author will use for the sample material router for which you want to prepare a template.
In a piece of sheet of plywood it makes a hole with a Forstner drill.
It then attaches to the hole in the template in an oval shape.
The edges of the hole are sanded on drum sander machine.
Manual router set transfer head, and in a few passages the excess material is removed from the body with the end mill.
Round neodymium magnets are glued in holes in the cover and the housing. For this purpose the author uses a two-component second adhesive.
Brass rod is installed in the hole, and the axle is cut to length. The author also notes the required length of the rod for decorative plugs in the place where you installed the magnet.
The two brass parts are glued into place in the lid.
Until the resin polymerizes, the author makes the pad faux wool, red felt cloth tape where you will hold the rings.
Pillow to keep in shape, the author cuts out the oval piece of cardboard, which is slightly less than the recess in the housing.
One of the edges of the cardboard is glued to the edge of the fabric. This convenient two-component adhesive. Position details can be changed until, until you add the hardener.
Now inside of the fabric is wrapped a piece of cotton wool, and the edges of the fabric are fixed by glue.
For added beauty pillow is wrapped with decorative ribbon.
The cover is installed in its place, and in its turn, in the closed position, is firmly fixed by a pair of neodymium magnets.
In the end the wizard again treats the outside of the box a hand plane. So he tries to give an interesting appearance to the product.
Then polishing the surface with abrasive paper, bringing to 220 grit. During manual polishing, special attention is paid to the ends of the brass inserts.
As a topcoat will provide a glossy acrylic varnish. The author causes it with a pneumatic airbrush in two layers.
However, this tool requires an air compressor. For a small Studio is fine and the electric version of the gun.
Finally, the box is ready.
I thank the author for the realization of a beautiful box.
All good mood, sound health, and interesting ideas!
