Researchers from the Department of chemical engineering has named this beetle, which lives in Central Asia Plesiophthophthalmus davidis. Its ability to degrade polystyrene is associated with bacteria of the genus Serratia that are in his intestinal flora. Scientists discovered this by giving the beetle larvae polystyrene. This “specific food” increased the number of bacteria Serratia and eventually reached 33% of the total content of the intestinal flora of the larvae.

According to scientists, if you are corrupting plastic strain that was discovered in this study and to reproduce the composition of the intestinal flora of the beetle, it is likely that it will be possible to completely biodegradeable polystyrene.

Polystyrene is one of the most common plastics, widely used in production. Previously, scientists have found other bugs that can eat the polystyrene. In the natural environment for its decomposition requires many decades.
