Greetings to all lovers of craftsmanship, I suggest for consideration the instructions for making a small hiking hatchet. DIY the author has hardened, so that the blade easily leaves a depression in normal unhardened steel. Homemade from a thick saw blade. The manufacturing process is not particularly complicated, but the hatchet turned out to be quite interesting. If you are interested in a homemade product, I suggest studying the process of its manufacture in more detail!
List of materials:
– saw blade or other source of carbon steel;
– wood for the handle;
– brass rods for pins;
– bolt and nut.
List of tools:
– drill with boring crowns;
– grinder (angle grinder);
– belt sander;
– file for metal;
– oil for hardening and oven;
– reagent for pickling steel;
– oil for wood impregnation.
The process of making homemade products:
Step one. Cut out the hatchet profile
The author transferred the profile of the ax to the saw blade and started cutting. We carry out cutting with a grinder, before starting work it would be good to check the steel for hardening.
Then the author drilled out the metal with crowns in the right places of the hatchet. The steel was drilled very hard, which speaks to its hardening. Since the hatchet will be hardened, the steel can be released to work.
We cut out all unnecessary parts of the metal with a grinder, where possible we work with a thick grinding disc, level out irregularities.
Step two. Grinding and shaping the blade
We grind the ax profile on a belt sander. The author refines problem areas with the help of a drill, sparks fly like from sparklers, usually steel with a high carbon content sparks.
The author also removed the blade using a belt sander, in the end the author refined the hatchet with sandpaper and a file.
Step three. Heat treatment
Heat the ax to a yellowish glow and immerse it in oil. If the ax is heated to the correct temperature, it should not be attracted to the magnet.
After cooling in oil, we check the steel; this must be done carefully, since the steel will be brittle. The author tried to scratch the ax with a file at 60 HRC, it is not taken, which means that the steel is hardened.
As a demonstration of hardening, the author also left scratches on the glass bottle.

We release the steel in the oven, a straw-colored oxide film should form on the steel. Most often, a temperature in the region of 190-200 ° C is used for tempering. It is advisable to let the ax cool down inside the oven after the vacation.
Step four. Cleaning and etching
We clean the steel from scale with fine sandpaper, now we can perform etching. Thanks to this procedure, the steel is covered with a dense oxide film, which prevents the metal from rusting.
We wash the ax from the reagent and, if desired, perform light grinding with fine sandpaper.
Step five. Details for the handle
Cut out metal inserts from the metal for the front of the handle. Of course, it would be nice to use brass or other beautiful metal here.
Also, the author himself carved a decorative nut and a bolt with a decorative head with the help of a drill, which tightens this metal part of the handle.
At the same stage, the author cut out wooden covers for the handle and prepared pins from brass.
Step six. Assembling the handle
We glue the lining to the hatchet with epoxy glue, everything is assembled on brass pins. In the back part you can put a tube as a pin, then you can tie the cord here.
When the glue cures, we give the handle to the desired shape with a file and grind it to a smooth state with sandpaper.
The hatchet is ready, it remains to saturate the handle with wood oil, it will accentuate the beauty of the wood and prevent the handle from absorbing water and dirt.
The hatchet looks gorgeous, and the blade is so hard that it cuts ordinary unhardened steel.
This project is completed, I hope , you liked the homemade product, and you found useful thoughts for yourself. Good luck and creative inspiration if you decide to do this again. Don't forget to share your ideas and homemade products with us!
