Every carpenter knows that a sharp carpentry tool is the key to the quality of parts processing.
Some of you will be surprised that when working with a blunt tool the likelihood of injury is much higher.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “JSK-koubou” will tell you how you can make a sharpener for chisels, planer blades and some knives with a straight cutting edge.
This project is quite simple to manufacture and does not require welding or turning. < br> Materials necessary for DIY.

This fixture in some aspects is very similar to the so-called “Skomorokh sharpener” (about its manufacture was described in detail in a recent article). Skomorokh sharpener analogues can be purchased on aliexpress via this link.
These sharpeners differ in the places where the knife and stone are fixed. In the first, the stone is fixed on a movable guide, and the knife is on the base. In the same sharpener, the opposite is true, and the stone is motionless.
First of all, using a hand-held circular saw, the craftsman cuts a rectangular base from a wooden panel. The dimensions of the base are 450 × 250 mm.
The base ribs are trimmed at 45 degrees with a mini-plane.
To fix water sharpening stones on the base, the master glues two small sides. Their height should be slightly less than a stone.
After the glue has set, all surfaces are sanded with sandpaper and covered with a layer of tinted oil-wax.
Impregnation of the base with oil is required, because the sharpening stones will be wetted with water, and the wood needs additional protection from moisture.
The master cut the guide and the base of the holder from 16 mm thick plywood.
The rectangular holder measures 120 × 35 mm.
Having marked the center line, the master drills a row of five holes for the M5 mortise furniture nuts.
The dimensions of the rail are 300 × 35 mm.
Both parts are glued into a T-piece. The position of the holder with holes is aligned with a square. During gluing, the elements are fixed to each other with F-clamps. This connection can be additionally strengthened with a pair of studs or self-tapping screws.
This structural element is covered with a layer of water-based polyurethane varnish.
Using an inbus (for a hexagonal slot) wrench, the master screws the furniture nuts into the holder.
The workpiece is fixed vertically in a vice, and a hole with a diameter of 4 mm is drilled in the end of the guide.
By the way, this is a joiner's vice with a quick clamping function. When moving the movable jaw, you do not need to turn the knob for a long time. Making a similar vice was described in detail in the next article.
A ring screw is screwed into the hole.
The next part will serve as a hook for the guide and will allow you to adjust the sharpening angle.
Two holes are drilled in a small block. The first will be glued with a pin from a steel bar. The second one (14 mm in diameter) is designed to grip the rack.
The clamp will be tightened with a bolt and an M6 nut, for which a transverse hole is prepared.
First, the block is cut in the tail part to the hole for the hairpin.
Then two corners are cut off, the side surfaces are sanded, and the nose is rounded.
On a two-component epoxy glue, the master glues a nut into the bore hole.
A steel bar with a diameter of 10 mm will serve as a kind of hook.
So that the glue is evenly distributed inside the hole, the author twists the bar slightly during installation.
You need to screw a nut with a mounting plate to the middle of the far edge of the base.
For drilling pilot holes for self-tapping screws, the master uses self-centering drills. This drill eliminates the need to mark hole centers, which is very convenient when installing door hinges.
It remains to fix the plate with a nut on four screws to the base.
A steel rod M14 350 mm long will serve as a stand. It is screwed into the nut.
A clamp with a hook is put on the stand, its position is fixed with a wing-head screw.
Here the sharpener is ready, it remains to hook the guide to the hook and install the water stone required grain size.
The author performs the first test on the plane's blade. Having pulled it out of the case, the piece of iron is fixed on the holder with a plate and a pair of M5 screws.
To set the correct sharpening angle, the master uses a digital protractor. First, the device is installed on the base and reset to zero.

After moistening the sharpening stone from a spray bottle, you can start sharpening, starting with a coarse-grained abrasive .
The operation is repeated with a gradual increase in size.
After sharpening the trigger, the master removes in one motion a small burr remaining on the back blades. The blade now easily passes the paper cut test.
A wide flat chisel is sharpened in a similar way.
With a small width of the cutter, you can sharpen them in pairs. Then the risk of “flipping corners” decreases.
This sharpener can also handle straight edged knives. The blade can be fixed with several plates. In this case, the edge must be perpendicular to the axis of the guideline.
When sharpening, you need to control the position of the blade, trying to press it with the entire plane.
