Hello dear readers and DIY !
Is it possible to make a wooden dish or bowl without using a lathe? There is some intrigue in this question, right? The answer to it will be this article.
In it, the author of the YouTube channel “Fisher's Shop” will tell you how you can make such a bowl in two ways.
So, the author decided to assemble a bowl from separate segments. And this is not a slip of the tongue – just “collect”, as is done with the constructor. Of course, it will not be possible to store jam and other small snacks in such a bowl, but fruit and bread will perfectly fit there. It will somewhat resemble a ribbed cage, for which it will receive the name “skeletal bowl”.
Materials necessary for home-made.
– Board from hazel, maple
– Joiner's glue, sandpaper, linseed oil, contact adhesive.
Hazel wood was chosen as the material for it. This slab has a serious defect, a large knot with a crack running along it. Therefore, it is not a pity to put it into consumption.
Now this the workpiece is divided into two parts along the defect with a circular saw.
Next comes processing a thick slab on a planer and jointer.
Finally, the workpiece is unfolded in thickness on a band saw. The result is 6 neat plaques.
But with they still have to cut off the defective sides, and then pass them through the thickness gauge again to obtain the required thickness and even layers.
After that, the paired parts are glued together into a solid panel and tightened with clamps.
A dish project is created in the “Fusion 360” editor.
Each panel is fixed in turn on a CNC machine. First, the central ring is cut out – the basis of the whole structure.
In a ring holes are made for attaching the ribs.
Before cutting the edges, the author places them on the virtual plane as tightly as possible to each other, so that try to fit them all on one wood panel.
The wizard first prints the edge templates, attaches them to the material and marks the starting position (starting point) from which the cutting process will begin. The total number of edges in the bowl is nine.
Each edge and the central ring itself are machined with a radius cutter with a thrust bearing and sanded with 220-grit sandpaper.
Now the ribs are glued into the prepared grooves on the central ring.
Here, even fixation is not required, since the ribs are tightly fitted to the dimensions of the grooves and sit firmly in them. The only thing to pay attention to is that the ribs are flush with the outer edges of the ring and do not protrude beyond them.
Further, on the drilling machine, the continuation of the holes is drilled through the wood mass of the edges themselves. The dowels will be placed in them.
The dowels themselves are made from maple logs (although you can buy them at the hardware store if you want). First, long slats of 7 × 7 mm are cut out, while the author uses a safe pusher.
Reiki by queues are inserted into the chuck of the screwdriver, and ground on a grinding machine, first their tip is sharpened, then the edges are smoothed along the entire length.
Next, the master puts a well-sharpened chisel to his homemade device by grinding the dowels, selects the optimal angle and fixes the chisel in this position with a clamp. Then the blanks are passed through an impromptu sharpener in turn.
Long dowels cut into segments of the required length.
The dowels are coated with glue and inserted into the holes. < br> After hardening glue, the author cuts off excess dowels using a multitool.
Excess ribs inside the bowl are ground off with a dremel.
The outer protruding parts are ground on the orbital machine.
Next comes the processing of edges and unnecessary protruding parts of the structure with a Dremel with a grinding attachment. This will give the ribs and ring a more natural look.
And now the whole dish has almost acquired a finished look.
The combination of dark and light wood species itself looks very impressive on its own. But if the wood is also opened with linseed oil, it will sparkle with all the colors and show its texture.
So, the first version is ready.
Now the author intends to tell you about another option for making the same dish, but with a traditional set of tools. The fact is that a CNC milling machine is a rather expensive thing, and not everyone can boast of having it in their workshop.
To begin with, the author prepared templates for the parts that make up the bowl, as well as wood panels.
The printed templates are glued to the material and cut along the contour on a band saw. It is important here to follow the outer contour of the lines.
Then each part is sanded on a drum sander to fit the line.
Ribs parts are additionally rounded off with a radius cutter with a thrust bearing.
Upper central the ring is made as follows. First, the rip fence on the circular saw is set 12 inches from the saw blade and the wood panel is trimmed to the specified width.
Further in a series of equally spaced grooves is cut into the board by a groove disc. The same distance is achieved by turning the board 180 degrees. This is how 9 equidistant grooves appear.
Then there is a center at the board, and two circles are drawn from it.
First, a Forstner drill makes a starting hole for the entry of the canvas.
The inner circumference of the ring is cut with an electric jigsaw.
Grinding on a drum sander eliminates sawing defects with a jigsaw.
Now follows mark the centers of each groove on the top side of the ring.
Only after that the master starts cutting the outer contour of the ring on the band saw.
Again, a small contour fit by grinding.
The next step is to drill through holes for dowels on drilling machine.
Ready-made dowels are glued into the holes, and then the process of assembling and processing the structure according to the previously described algorithm is going on.
Finally, final sanding and impregnation with linseed oil.
