Hello, dear readers and homemade products !
Surely each of you has a wall clock in your house. Perhaps the appearance of the purchased watch does not suit you and you would like to make it yourself. By the way, “designer” clocks often have a very simple design at an unreasonably high cost.
In this article, Glen, the author of the YouTube channel “DIY Creators”, will tell you how you can make a very interesting wall clock in the “modern” style from the available materials.
Despite the machine saws used by the master, this project is quite repeatable with hand tools.
Materials necessary for home-made.
– Quartz clock, mechanism
– Sheet plywood 25 mm thick, board 25 × 75 mm
– Self-tapping screws for wood
– Hangers for a picture
– Stain, polyurethane spray varnish, wood glue, sanding discs with Velcro.
First of all, the master cuts blanks from pine boards 25 × 75 mm in lengths 75 and 350 mm using miter saw. The same operation can be performed with a hacksaw with a miter box, here only smooth ends are important.
The long part will serve as an overhead panel, and the short one – as a lining.
Then a square piece with dimensions 350 × 350 mm is cut out of plywood on a circular saw, this will be the main clock panel.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1607296000_mcl-008.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> The overlay will be shifted not only to the side, but also down. Here, everyone is free to choose at their own discretion, like the entire design as a whole.
Having marked the matching points on the lining and the main panel, the author attaches the movement case to the joint of the parts, and draws a contour.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1607296054_mcl-018.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> < a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1607295994_mcl-022.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> To there was access to setting up the mechanism, and replacing the battery, the author cuts out the extra segments with a band saw. It is quite possible to do with a hand jigsaw here.
Now the markup of the clock setting center is performed on the back of the overhead panel.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1607295992_mcl-039.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> A 12 mm Forstner drill is used to make a blind hole 6 mm deep. It will contain a washer and a clamping nut.
The hole is drilled through with a 10-mm drill. The clock spindle will pass through it.
Arranging clock on the back of the cover panel (the larger hole should be on the other side), and aligning them with an angular ruler, the author outlines their contours.
To simplify the selection of excess wood, the master performs part of this procedure on a drilling machine using a Forstner drill suitable diameter.
Small lintels and wood in the corners of the notch are removed with a flat chisel.
The watch case is temporarily placed in a recess and fixed with a nut.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1607296070_mcl-067.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Then all the elements are put together, and their fit is checked – the ends of the boards must match, and the groove must match with the outline of the mechanism.
The boards are glued together and fixed with F-clamps.
While the glue is solidifying, the author grinds the surfaces of the main panel with an orbital machine.

Two coats of white aerosol enamel are applied to this part.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1607296052_mcl-115.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> The main panel is impregnated with a bourgeois analogue of wood stain, it is not so fluid and oily.
Excess impregnation is removed almost immediately with a rag.
After the stain dries, a layer of glossy spray varnish is applied.
Now you can finally install the mechanism in its place in the overhead panel, and fix it with a nut.
Then the hour, minute and second hands are sequentially set. It is also advisable to insert a battery and check the operation of the mechanism.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1607296035_mcl-160.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> A plank is placed under the main panel (so as not to damage the table), two through pilot holes are marked and drilled for the fastening screws. The holes must be countersunk with a larger drill bit so that the screw heads do not protrude above the surface.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1607295990_mcl-176.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Self-tapping screws should be selected so long that they do not go through the material and do not swell the front surface, because they will be screwed in from the back of the panel.
Fixing self-tapping parts between each other, the author selects a place to install the suspension so that the body does not outweigh in any of the sides.
A simple cable with eyelets at the ends is quite suitable as a suspension. It can be fixed on studs, or self-tapping screws with a press washer. Small picture hangings are also suitable.
