Greetings to all fans of homemade products , as well as fans of joinery. This article is sure to interest you. I present to your attention the idea of making an unusual coffee table, in any case, I have not seen anything like it before. To create this project, the author was prompted by the need to make a dining table. The thing is that after the calculations, the author realized that there would be scraps, and decided to make a kind of reduced version, which fit perfectly into the interior of the house and liked his little daughter very much.
The author decided to start the production with the preparation of the countertop from trimming oak boards. The author cleared the blank of punishment using chisels of various sizes. Then he processed flat surfaces with a plane.
After processing the planes, the author took up the ends. It was necessary to cut the workpiece to the required length on both sides. To do this, the author used an electric saw with a guide, but the disc outage was not enough, the board was too thick. Therefore, the trimming had to be completed with a hand saw.
The board had splits on the sides. They needed to be strengthened somehow, and so that it was beautiful. The author did the following, from an old cutting board (made of olive wood), cut out inserts in the form of butterflies of a suitable size. I chose holes of the desired shape under them in the board. First, I marked out with a pencil, then, using a router and a set of sharp chisels, I selected the excess wood. I installed the inserts in their places, smearing their edges with glue, smeared the joints with a mixture of glue and sawdust. In the future, all irregularities will be removed due to sanding.
Putting the countertop aside, the author has prepared the details for the frame. Guided by the drawing, the author cut out the necessary grooves for further connection, drilled holes for the screws. The author polished every detail.
Here you can see how the author assembled two racks and connected them with crossbars. To assemble the racks, the author made a fixture from scraps of timber, a sheet of metal and magnets. It was not him who produced it from the side. The author also covered the gaps at the joints with a mixture of glue and sawdust.
After the framework has been built, the author I painted it in three layers (with interlayer drying) with walnut stain. When the last coat of wood stain was dry, I applied a coat of wood oil to set the finish.
At this stage, the author again returns to processing the table top. The planer is used again, then grinding. In order to achieve the desired result, the author used 80, 120 and 240 grit emery wheels. The surfaces acquired the desired gloss and perfect shape.
Now you need to coat the countertop with oil. Here the author decided to experiment and apply a varnish with the addition of wax, for hardwood. It is this coating that he plans to use when decorating the dining table, and as I wrote at the beginning, this table is like his prototype. The author thought that such a coating would not be suitable for oak, but the result exceeded expectations. The oak texture looks amazing, and the eucalyptus (butterfly inserts) have a beautiful red sheen.
That's all. As you can see, the table is neat, original and fits perfectly into the interior of the living room.
At this I will probably finish, if you like the idea, like it and take note … Good luck to everyone and see you again at Samodelkin's !!!!
