DIY simple frame clamp
Hello dear readers and homemade clamps !
There are not many clamps in the joinery business, as well as their varieties.
One of the most commonly used types of clamps are frame clamps, they are designed for assembling and gluing picture frames, or various rectangular cases.
In this article, Eugene, the author of the YouTube channel “Home Workshop”, will tell you how you can make one of the simple designs of such clamps.
This project can repeat with a minimum of tools, except that you need a simple drilling machine.
Materials necessary for home-made.
– Sheet plywood, hardwood beams
– Bakelite wing nuts
– Furniture attachment nuts, steel hairpin M8
– Linseed oil, two-component epoxy adhesive
– Wood glue, Velcro sanding discs.
Manufacturing process.
So, the main material for the clamping corners of such a clamp will serve as a pine bar 30 × 40 mm. Of course, if possible, it is better to choose hard hardwood.
Using a miter saw, the master cuts the timber into pieces of 200 mm length. In these details, it is important to cut the ends strictly at right angles – the geometry of the corners obtained depends on this.
You can do without a miter saw by using a hacksaw and a miter box. As a result, the author got 8 such details.
After cutting, you need to remove burrs and grind the surfaces of the workpieces with an orbital machine.
Then the workpieces are separated into two sets of four.
Centers are marked on one of the ends of the first four parts. Blind holes are made in them half the length of the workpiece using an 8-mm three-point drill for wood.
The remaining four parts drilled through.
This is the only operation that needs to be done on a drilling machine. It is important that the axis of the hole is parallel to the sides of the parts.
When drilling, the workpiece must be fixed in a machine vice.
Now the blanks are laid out in pairs in the form of a corner. The continuation of the axis of the second workpiece is marked on the part in which a through hole is made.
When gluing and assembling the corners, the master uses an angle clamp.
After waiting for the glue to harden, and without removing the workpiece, deep pilot holes are drilled along the marks with a 2.5-mm drill. < br>This connection is reinforced with a pair of long screws. It is desirable that their heads are flush with the surface, for which you need to countersink the holes.

Likewise the other three corners are glued and assembled.
The master decided to make his own wing nuts, for which he marked out the circles and their centers on thick sheet plywood. The necessary shape is also given to the contours of future handles.
It is advisable to carry out further processes in the reverse order.
First, the author cuts out the details according to the markings on the band saw.
Grinding of edges and rounding of edges is performed on a belt sander.
And finally , through holes with a diameter of 10 mm are drilled in the centers of the blanks.
As you can see, it would be more convenient to drill before separating and grinding the parts.
Furniture attachment nuts are inserted into the holes on one side, and you need to lightly hit them with a hammer to leave the spike marks.
To prevent the plywood from cracking, thin holes are drilled in the marks obtained.
After that you can safely hammer the nuts into place.
So, the set of nuts and corners is ready. The last structural elements will be four steel M8 studs.
These pins are cut to the desired length, and glued into blind holes in the corners with a two-component epoxy adhesive. The bore hole for the studs could have been made slightly smaller in diameter.
After resin curing , the author makes a hole in the corner and the hairpin, for this a 3-mm drill for metal is used.
To reliably block the hairpin from rotation, a self-tapping screw is screwed into this hole.
To protect the product from exposure to moisture, the author impregnates all wooden surfaces of the parts with linseed oil, and leaves them to dry. This protective coating also prevents the frame from sticking to the clamp itself.
Everything is ready, you can assemble the frame clamp by threading the pins through the through holes in the corners.
Last homemade wing nuts are screwed onto the studs.
Having prepared four parts with 45-degree ends, the master applies glue and puts them in a clamp. < br>
It remains to tighten one by one nuts, and wait for the glue to harden.
Such a clamp does not have support platforms at the corners. This allows it to be used when assembling rectangular bodies.
Also in a recent article, it was told in detail about the manufacture of a frame clamp, tightened with just one screw.
Instead of such clamps, you can use a set of universal spring angle clamps.
Tools used by the author.
– Screwdriver
– Three-point drills for wood, cobalt drills for metal
– Hole drilling guide – Miter saw
– Band saw, band saw blades – Machine vice, drilling machine
– Belt sander machine, orbital machine
– Angular clamp
– Combined angular ruler, pencil.
