Hello, dear readers and homemade products !
Surely each of you has been to a furniture store and picked up a desk. However, finding something special is not always the case.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “HomeMadeModern” will tell you how to make a desk top. Everything is very simple in it, but there is one highlight – a smooth bend of plywood, forming an open shelf.
В such a secluded place will perfectly fit your laptop or tablet, however, it can be any folders, books, papers, and other small office supplies.
The technique of making such a table is very simple, and can be repeated in a small home carpentry workshop.
Materials necessary for home-made.
– Sheet plywood 6 and 20 mm thick
– Steel strip, wood screws with countersunk head
– Titebond II wood glue, velcro sanding discs, abrasive sponge.
Birch plywood will serve as the main material for the tabletop. For the top layer of the tabletop, 20mm plywood is used.
When cutting the tabletop from the sheet, the author fixes a long board with an even edge with spring clips, which in this case serves as a kind of guide for a hand-held circular saw.
If you happen to perform such operations often enough, then it is better to make a special guide – this was described in detail in one of the articles.
To carry out cross-sections, first, the primary marking is carried out using the Svenson square. This time the cuts are made along the marking line without a guide.
Like last time, the author puts boards under the sheet so that the saw blade does not catch on the floor.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119116_ld-021.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> The curved bottom of the tabletop will be made of two layers of 6mm plywood. The workpieces are cut to the same width as the top of the countertop, but are deliberately made longer to take into account the length consumption for bends.
The shelf itself will be approximately 16 inches wide. The author makes a markup of the shelf and adds another 8 inches on each side for the bends, and 6 for the joining of layers on each side.
В within these 8-inch sections, a series of cuts are made on each of the two blanks. In this case, the material is cut only half the thickness. To do this, you must first set the overhang of the saw blade to the desired depth. This can be done “by eye”, or more accurately, using a digital height and depth gauge.
Notches are made at intervals of about half an inch.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119111_ld-038.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Thanks to the numerous cuts, the plywood sheet becomes very flexible and pliable in these places.
Then the author cuts off a piece of plywood the same width as the table top and 16 inches long – this is the width of the future shelf.
The edges of the unbent part of the future shelf are marked on the underside of the tabletop.
Further, along the lines obtained, he places two beams of 50 × 100 mm on the surface of the plywood sheet, and on them a plywood platform. The final height of the shelf will depend on such a support, in this case – 70 mm.
Now you can place ¼ inch plywood on top with the notches up (the first layer of the shelf), and press its central part with clamps.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119098_ld-048.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> < a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119124_ld-056.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Now you can clearly see where to apply the glue. The craftsman measures an equal distance on both sides and applies glue liberally to the inside of the countertop. To press both sheets together for the duration of gluing, all the same spring clamps are used.
The excess of thin plywood is cut off, after which clamps are also applied at the ends.
A similar operation is performed on the second side.
The only essential detail in this process is how the adhesive is applied to the respective areas. It is recommended to squeeze it out not over the entire surface to be glued, but only along the perimeter. This way you can avoid unnecessary smudges, which afterwards greatly complicate the sanding work.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119093_ld-084.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> < a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119080_ld-090.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> The Titebond II wood glue used by the author hardens for about 4 hours.
After drying, a really greasy layer of glue is applied to the top side of a thin plywood sheet, and evenly distributed over its entire surface.
The weakest areas of this part will be where the cuts were previously made. The author tries to fill the resulting voids with glue. You can also add some wood dust left during sawing into the crevices.

The top layer is also pressed down with a thick piece of plywood and pressed with F-clamps.
It is important to press down not only flat planes, but also both layers of thin plywood at bends to each other.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119117_ld-115.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Again cut off excess plywood and add clamps at the ends.
After thorough drying, the clamps and support beams are removed, and the author's worktop is almost ready.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119086_ld-137.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> < a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119106_ld-144.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Using the board as a guide, the master evens the side edges of the tabletop.
Then he grinds them with an orbital machine, starting from the 100th, and finishing with the 150th and 220th grain.
The author purchased ready-made curved legs, which can also be made by yourself by bending them from a steel strip.
When attaching the legs to the table top, the craftsman makes blind pilot holes in it using a self-centering drill. All that remains is to screw the screws into place.
Author masks all kinds of irregularities on the edges of the table top with joiner's putty. By and large, this is a mixture of wood dust and wood glue.
Particular attention should be paid to the curved edges of the shelf, in these places there may be holes from the cuts.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2020-12/1608119138_ld-171.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> After drying putty, edges and surfaces are sanded with a machine with 220 grit discs. Edges and corners are also slightly rounded.
Then the horizontal surfaces are sanded. Using a small abrasive sponge, the author gets inside the shelf.
Everything the product is cleaned of dust with a clean piece of canvas.
Then a thick layer of wood finish is applied to all wood surfaces. This oil impregnation is made on a natural plant basis. It perfectly reveals the texture and protects the wood from moisture.
The most common oil for impregnating wood is linseed.
The first coat should be absorbed for about 10 minutes, then the second can be applied. Excess impregnation is wiped off with a cloth.
As a result, we got such a desk, and in general, almost all furniture can be made of plywood.
Tools used by the author.
– Screwdriver, self-centering drills
– Hand circular saw
– Orbital sander
– Digital height and depth gauge
– Spring clamps
– Svenson's square, tape measure, marker.
I thank the author for the interesting technique of bending wood, and an unusual table made using this technology.
