Tanto style knife from the blade of a lawn mower Greetings to all fans of homemade products and those who just dropped by to visit Samodelkin. As you may have guessed from the name, the article will focus on making a knife. It all started with the fact that the author of this homemade product found an old broken lawn mower while walking. And as we usually say – away we go. I do not know how strong this knife will be, but the idea is quite interesting, usually stainless steel is used for knives, but here is a rusty blank. But what the author turned it into looks elegant.
And so, in addition to the knife from the lawn mower, the author needed: trimming of wood (walnut), an aluminum plate, an aluminum bar with a diameter of 10 mm, epoxy resin. The author used the following tool: grinder (angle grinder), drill, homemade grinder, clamps, polishing wheel, as well as a set of wheels (for grinder).

Step 1.

Before proceeding with the production, the author drew a sketch. Then he photographed it, uploaded the photo to a computer, processed it in the program. The result was a drawing on a 1: 1 scale, the author printed it out, cut it out along the contour. This is how the author made the template.

Step 2.

The author has leveled the knife from the lawn mower. Then I cleaned off the rust using a grinder with a grinding wheel. Then, changing the grinding wheel to a cut-off wheel, the author gave the workpiece the desired shape. Pre-traced the template on the cleaned workpiece. Also at this stage, the author drilled holes for the rivets of the rollers and handles. After shaping and drilling the holes, the author sanded the workpiece to a smooth surface. Only a few bands of corrosion remained here and there. The author decided to leave them. As a reminder of where it all began. The author hardened the almost finished blade and soaked it in vinegar for several days.

Step 3.

Putting the blade aside, the author set about preparing the rollers. He decided to make them from an aluminum plate. First, he drilled a hole in it about the center. Then, setting it on the edge, sawed it into two equal (in thickness) parts. Having applied the obtained blanks on both sides of the blade and aligning the holes in them and on the blade, I drove a rivet made of an aluminum bar into them. An important point, before attaching the aluminum blanks to the blade, the author smeared them with epoxy. The author used a clamp to fix the details. Next, the author prepared the details of the handles from scraps of walnut wood and, like the rollers, fixed them on the blade. After the epoxy hardened, the author roughly sanded the handle, giving the desired shape to the wooden parts. Cut off the protruding parts of the rivets on each side.

Step 4.

So, gradually we came to the final stage. The knife is almost ready, the final touches remain. The author completed the final sanding using 400 to 2000 grit sandpaper. Then the author proceeded to polish to an almost mirror-like surface. He made it with a felt circle, on which he had previously applied a polishing paste. By the way, during polishing, the blade received not only the desired shine, but also the final sharpening. Its author checked in all known ways, on a sheet of paper. Well, that's all.

PS
I don't want to show off, but a few knives I did it for myself when I worked in production, but they were made of valves and that's a completely different story. This is me so that you do not think that I have no idea how this is done at all. In any case, it's up to you to judge how good this knife is and how competently (I don't mean spelling) I described the process.
To everyone who's nerves withstood and who read to the end, thanks for your attention))) See you again at Samodelkin's! Attention !!! This homemade product is posted for informational purposes only.
