is preparing to enjoy her last festive period inside the White House, following her husband ‘s loss at . In the build-up to , Melania was on the receiving end of some fierce criticism after she posted a video of herself mixing with children in the White House, while not wearing a mask. The children and adults visiting the President’s Blue Room were all wearing masks, as concern surrounding .

But after sharing a video of the Christmas display the children saw, Twitter users raged at Melania, demanding she “wear a mask and set an example”.

Around Christmas, Melania is often criticised for her choice of decorations and events she hosts by the public, including last year when an author opted to speak out and defend her following another barrage of anger.

At the time, a new book called Melania & Michelle: First Ladies in a New Era had just been released by Tammy R. Vigil, which was deemed “troublesome” by writer Miranda Devine.

Ms Devine described the book as a “mere bipartisan assessment of the public images of both women”.

The book itself offered insight into both Michelle and Melania’s spells as FLOTUS, detailing the current’s “difficulties with the fact she followed a popular and competent First Lady”.

Ms Devine argued that for years Melania’s “Christmas decorations have been pilloried, her accent mocked”, yet she maintained her cool amid mounting backlash.

She believed Melania had not committed “the same errors of arrogant overreach”, like other First Ladies, adding: “Melania has the humility to understand that she is not the main game.

“Such command of ego is the first requirement of a First Lady.”

The writer exposed the unfair treatment Melania had received after being “only halfway through her first term with a wildly hostile media” with Michelle “who completed two terms”.

She claimed criticisms of Melania “are more vicious, personal and unrelenting than any First Lady has endured”.

Ms Devine explained that it was perhaps because her husband Donald had become so used to receiving hatred, that this saw others direct it towards Melania.

She concluded in a New York Post column last year: “Clearly, since the President has proven impervious to abuse, his enemies want to get at him through his wife.

“Whatever you think of her husband, you can’t say she has behaved with anything but dignity in her role, despite ugly provocations, which include attacks on her young son, Barron.”

After the book was published, Melania revealed her Christmas decorations for the 2019 celebrations, which paid homage to “The Spirit of America”.

She posted a picture of a Christmas wreath, claiming they were “signature Melania” wreaths, something that was torn apart on social media.

Some mocked Melania as the post made it appear as if the FLOTUS herself had invented the Christmas wreath, with one disgruntled user commenting: “A green wreath with a red bow hung on windows, doors and hearths is a common tradition all across the USA for decades and decades now.”

Another added: “Are you saying she made them herself? Or designed wreaths to have red bows? Or what?”

Comparisons between Michelle and Melania have been continuous during the latter’s four-year stint in the White House.

Michelle was openly critical of Melania after she didn’t reach out to support the new First Lady of the United States, Dr Jill Biden, after her husband Joe Biden won the election in November.

Michelle’s comments came after CNN reported Melania was secretly recorded by former friend and adviser Stephanie Winston Wolkoff to the FLOTUS condemning a policy installed by the Obamas in 2018.

Under the Obamas, “children were separated from parents only when authorities had concerns for their wellbeing”, while this policy was not continued under Mr Trump.

In the tapes, Melania said: “OK, and then I do it and I say that I’m working on Christmas and planning for Christmas and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children that they were separated [from]?’

“Give me a f****** break. When they were saying anything when Obama did that? I cannot go, I was trying to get the kid reunited with the mom. I didn’t have a chance – needs to go through the process and through the law.”

Stephanie Grisham, Melania’s chief of staff, accused Ms Wolkoff of “wilfully breaking a non-disclosure agreement (NDA)” and using it as a “clear attempt” at being relevant.

She added: “The timing of this continues to be suspect – as does this never-ending exercise in self-pity and narcissism.”
