DIY cutting board, features of working with circular equipment for a router
Hello dear readers and DIY !
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Pask Makes” will tell you about the peculiarities of using the “circular” equipment for a hand router. As an example, he will make a cutting board with an unusual inlay.
The kitchen board itself is a rather trivial object, all its zest will be in its special design. The board will consist of several wooden rings, contrasting in color and texture, which will be “implanted” into a rectangular base.
Materials necessary for home-made.
– Boards of hard wood (merbau, camphor wood, cedar)
– Plexiglas , sheet plywood, wood screws
– Double-sided tape, masking tape, Velcro sanding discs
– Wood glue, sandpaper, oil-wax.
Tools used by the author.
– Bosch hand router , screwdriver
– Spiral end mills
– Orbital sander < br> – Bandsaw, band saw blades
– Miter saw
– Thicknesser, jointer, circular saw
– F-clamps
– Square, tape measure, compasses, pencil, roller, brush. < manufacturing process.
The author begins the project by processing a camphor board. It will serve as a base piece.
Given the position of the crack, the craftsman marks out the whole piece of the board and cuts off the excess on a band saw. This will simplify further processing.
The base surfaces are aligned on the jointer.
Further, using a miter saw, the workpiece is divided into two equal parts along the length.
Titebond II adhesive is applied to the joint with a roller. This glue is safe for use in products in contact with food.
Both parts are clamped in clamps while the glue cures.
For contrast, he selects remnants of merbau wood and cedar wood trim. These elements will be used to make rings for inlay.
A merbau board is cut in half and also glued into a rectangular blank.
While the first two blanks are drying, the master is processing cedar wood. This board is too thick and has to be made a little thinner on a thickness gauge.
After gluing, the surfaces of the first two blanks are also leveled .
Then he returns to the camphor board and forms from it neat square.
The saw blade is set at a 45 degree angle. Now, sharp corners are cut from each of the four sides of the base.
Now you can start cutting circles. First, in each of the prepared planks, you will need to find the center, and drill a hole in it for the pin for the radius equipment of the hand mill.
To cut the circles, this kind of equipment will be used, in fact it is a strip of sheet plexiglass, fixed instead of a standard sole on a Bosch hand router .
About making a more “advanced” circular nozzle was described in a recent href = “https://usamodelkina.ru/18136-kombinirovannaja-cirkulnaja-nasadka-dlja-frezera-i-lobzika-svoimi-rukami.html”> article .
A series of holes must be drilled along the radial line of the guide. These holes determine the radius of the circle along which the cutter will move.
The author explains why the step between the holes for the central pin must be made equal to the diameter of the cutter – so that the cut rings fit together.
After drilling the next hole, you need measure the correct distance. To do this, the master uses the cutter itself, inserting it between the locking block and the edge of the guide, moving the latter to the left along the table of the drilling machine.
In this case, this distance between the two holes is 6 mm.
The locking block is pressed against the edge of the guide and re-fixed on the parallel stop.
When the scale is ready, you can start cutting the circles. But first, a wide hole is made in the base board, into which the rings will be inserted.
The disc remaining from the processing will also come in handy.
The base with a round cut is laid out on a cedar board.

For the convenience of cutting, sheets of plywood are screwed onto the workbench .
The workpieces are fixed on double-sided tape.
The next circle is cut into the cedar board. This ring should fit neatly into the large hole in the base board. Accordingly, you need to move the pin one hole further from the cutter, we will get just the required outer radius for the first ring.
Now the pin is rearranged, and you can cut out the central part of the circle, turning into a ring.
Double-sided tape holds the ring very tightly, and you need to peel it off carefully, prying it with a spatula.
The ring is rubbed with sandpaper and the tightness of the connection is checked. Although it is split, it is fixable when assembling the board.
The thickness of the rings may vary depending on the individual design. In this case, the craftsman randomly alternates between different types of wood when forming the rings.
Each new disc is cut out to fill the remaining empty space in the center of the base board. And then the disc turns into a ring, and is placed inside the previous one. It turns out a typesetting construction.
Such an insert will strengthen the assembly of rings.
The author changed the way of fixing the blanks for cutting, and glued them with masking tape and second glue. Masking tape is much easier to remove from the surface of the workpiece.
It remains to make the last few rings.
The last element will be a small solid disk.
There are a few minor gaps between the assembled parts. But if you consider that the project was being done rather hastily, this is a small mistake. Gaps can be easily filled with glue.
All parts are separated, liberally lubricated with glue, and assembled together. The first is the one-piece lining in the form of a disk into the main board.
Next, the rings are glued in one by one.
The last disc fits very tightly, the rings had time to swell slightly from the glue.
The whole assembly is placed under oppression.
After the glue has hardened, the board is driven through a thickness gauge and sanded with an orbital machine.
It remains to process the finished product with oil-wax, harmless for contact with food.
The result is such an unusual cutting board.
Thank the author for a master class on making an unusual cutting board, and the peculiarities of working with a circular nozzle for a hand router.
