How to make a beautiful papier-mâché lampshade
Hello dear readers and DIY !
Thinking of buying a new pendant lamp or lampshade for a table lamp? Or maybe it is more interesting to make it yourself, choosing the shape and appearance to your taste?
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Mapetie” will tell you how to make a lampshade for pendant lamps and more.
This homemade product is simple enough to make in home conditions, and it will be interesting to make it with your children.
Materials needed for homemade products.
– Ball for fitness, glass balls
– LED Edison lamps, wire, socket, switch
– Paper, wallpaper glue, PVA glue, acrylic paint, sheet plywood
– Film, sandpaper, abrasive sponge.
Tools used by the author.
– Electric jigsaw
– Screwdriver
– Mixing nozzle, brush, silicone spatula.
Manufacturing process.
So , ordinary office paper will serve as the main material for making the lampshade. Old documents and damaged pages will do. First of all, the sheets should be cut with scissors, or simply broken by hand into 8 – 16 pieces.
The resulting pieces are soaked in a bucket of water, and after a while they are ground again by hand.
Next, a screwdriver or drill with a mixing attachment is used, and grinding continues until a finely dispersed gruel is obtained.
While grinding the mixture, you can add dye to it to get the desired color.
The mixture is wrapped in a cloth and excess moisture is squeezed out.
After placing the mixture in a plastic bowl, powder wallpaper glue is added to it, and it is thoroughly mixed again. At this stage, you can also add dye, so there will be less consumption, and the staining can be made uneven, like the texture of marble or granite.
After that, calibrated glass balls with a diameter of 3-5 mm are added to the composition. The required diameter of the balls is selected depending on the thickness of the future lampshade.
For the convenience of applying the mixture to the surface of the ball, the craftswoman cut out a special shape from the plywood in the form of a contour of a sphere sweep segment (the segment is marked with a red line in the drawing). Film is laid out on this form.
The finished mixture is laid out on a plastic wrap inside the sides of the mold, covered on top, and rolled out with a rolling pin. Here balls and plywood will set the thickness of future details.
A small fitness ball will serve as a temporary form for assembling the segments into a single whole. To reduce the likelihood of model sticking, it is best to apply silicone spray lubricant to its surface.
The top layer of the film is removed and the first segment of the lampshade is transferred to the ball. This is where the plywood mold is clearly visible.
The same operations are repeated for the rest of the lampshade elements.
Segment joints are carefully connected by hand, and the surface of the sphere is leveled with a silicone spatula.
When leveling material, hands and tools should be slightly moistened with water. So the surface will be even, and the glass balls will appear well over it.

Next, the workpiece must be sprayed with water from a spray bottle.
In addition to many small balls already in the layer, the craftswoman decided to add several large specimens. Places are specially prepared for them, while the material is not frozen yet.
The surface of the lampshade is treated with a damp sponge and sent to dry. This will take several days, depending on the thickness of the layer. Perform accelerated drying using a hair dryer or other heaters only after gaining experience.
The lampshade is dry, now you can blow out and take out the ball.
To get an even edge, it needs to be sanded. It is best to stick sandpaper on glass or other flat surface, and simply rotate the lampshade on it around its axis.
The craftswoman makes not the first lampshade, and for balancing she uses just such a stand with a tip on the top. A product is placed on the tip, and a balance point is sought. When it is found, the lampshade is pressed against the spike, and a mark is obtained for drilling a hole for the wire.
A hole is drilled in this place with a screwdriver.
Now you need to clean the surfaces of the glass balls from the inside of the lampshade by removing excess paper with a sponge or brush.
After drying the product, you can apply an additional layer of transparent acrylic varnish, which will give a light gloss to the surfaces and slightly increase the strength of the structure. Also, the varnish coating will protect against moisture, which will allow wet cleaning of the finished product.
The last part on which the lampshade will be held is the crosspiece.
Sheet plywood is quite suitable for this. Having marked out the contours of the future three-beam cross, a hole is made in its center for mounting the cartridge. For this, a Forstner drill or a crown of a suitable diameter is used.
Next, the part is cut along the marked lines using an electric jigsaw or a jigsaw.
The resulting part is sanded with sandpaper and painted white with acrylic paint.
The finished cross is glued to the lampshade using ordinary PVA glue.
It remains to pass the wire through the hole in the lampshade, fix the cartridge in the crosspiece, assemble the upper part of the fixture of the lamp, and fix it on the ceiling.
This is what the finished lamp looks like. Of course, such a lampshade can also be fixed on a table lamp stand.
Everything is ready, you can screw in the light bulb. Edison's LED lamps look very interesting.
I thank the author for a simple way of making papier-mache lampshades.
