Stylish leather glasses
From this article we will learn how you can make such stylish leather glasses as in the photo above.
The master will share with us the secrets of working with leather and tell us which ones are needed for this
Tools and materials: – Vegetable tanned leather – 2.0-3.2 mm (5-8) ounces; -Leather lining (0.8 mm (2 ounce) suede or pigskin);
-Acrylic lenses; – Glue for leather; -Dye for leather or Tokonole for waxing;
-1 mm waxed polyester thread; -Rivets; -Various tools for working with leather (trimmer, rubber hammer, needles, etc.);
-3D-printer;
Step one: printing 3D-forms
To make glasses of such an unusual shape, you need a template. His master prints on a 3D printer. Any 3D printer that supports PLA will work.
The wizard prints forms with 100% filling, with the expectation of using it to make several glasses.
If you want to use the form for one project, it will be enough to fill at least 25% + 8 wall layers.
Files for printing forms, files for making patterns, STL files and files with other projects can be downloaded here, here and here.
Step two: curly parts of glasses
First, the master, according to the drawings, cuts out the skin for curly parts of glasses.
Then it soaks the blanks in hot water. The skin needs to soften and a few minutes are enough for this.
Soaked leather will interfere further into the 3D shape and sets the other half of the shape.
He presses the skin into the mother's part of the shape, push it through with my fingers and try not to wrinkle it. It lays in pieces of soft EVA to minimize skin wrinkling.
Vegetable tanned leather takes shape better than other leathers, so I highly recommend it for good results.
Then he places the molds under the press and presses once. Then he checks. It is necessary that there are no folds on the material.
Then he removes the foam pad and presses the material again. In this state, it leaves the workpiece for a day until it dries. For each glasses you need two curly blanks + two pads, also curly.
Step three: flat part
If the figured part is made of leather with a thickness of 2.4 mm, then the flat part is cut out of leather 0.8 mm.
Step four: holes for lenses
Cut holes for lenses in the shaped part and lining.
Step five: assembling the curly part
Before assembling, you need to prepare the lenses. First, he puts them on lining and trace along the contour. Then he sharpens the lenses.
Prepares parts for gluing, trims off excess material and processes leather ends.

Next, you need to glue the part. In order not to scratch the visible part of the lenses, sticks a leather circle on them.
To improve the fit to the eyes, he grinds the edges of the lenses. The edges of the leather are tinted and polished. Then he glues the lenses to the lining and then to the curly part.
Step six: stitching and final assembly
Next, you need to prepare the part for stitching. Marking is made on a flat part with a compass. Then holes are made with a punch.
The figured part is glued to the flat one and then, through the previously made holes, you need to punch holes in the figured part.
Then he sews the two parts together using a waxed thread.
Glues the suede lining …
Cuts edges. It processes them with a trimmer, then polishes them.
Makes a strap.
Removes protective discs and polishes the lenses. He cleans them with isopropyl alcohol, lens cleaning solution and alcohol.
