Greetings to all lovers of homemade products and those who just looked at the site in search of interesting ideas. As you already understood from the name, the article will focus on making a sofa. The author of this homemade product positions it as a bench in which you can store various small items, ranging from blankets with pillows to boxes. This design, in my opinion, is suitable for any room, be it a bedroom, a nursery or a kitchen. Even in the hallway, you can assemble such a sofa, if the size allows. In general, it's up to you to judge.
– jigsaw or miter saw
– drill bit for wood 2 mm
– tape measure
– masking tape (or other removable tape)
– 32 screws 4×80 mm
– 36 screws 3.5×40 mm
– 48 screws 3.5×20 mm (including 6 pieces per hinge)
– 6 hinges (2 for each cover)
– metal corners
– wooden beams 44×44 mm < br> – wood joinery panels, thickness 18 mm
– putty or putty
– paint or varnish
– paper or sheet to protect the floor during painting
– felt pads (for floor protection).
First of all, the author decided on the dimensions of the structure, calculated the required number of parts and their dimensions. I designed everything on a computer. After that, I bought everything I needed in the store. In the drawings, dimensions are in millimeters. According to the author, the dimensions can be changed, it all depends on what dimensions you need a sofa, you should also consider where it will stand. He also recommends that you prepare your project before ordering or buying materials to minimize costs and avoid waste.
After the author figured out the project and purchased the material, he started assembling. First, I assembled one frame from two long (2244x44x44 mm) and four short (312x44x44 mm) bars on screws 4×80 mm. Then another one of the same kind. Then he connected them together using short crossbars made of timber (size in the drawing 406x44x44 mm), for fastening he used the same screws (4×80 mm). Please note that the author connects the frames with crossbars, fixing them in the same place as their jumpers. If you do the same, keep in mind that the screw needs to be shifted slightly away from the middle of the bar, since the jumper screw is already screwed in the middle.
At this stage, the author trims the finished frame with panels on the sides and front. To do this, he uses furniture boards (he calls them panels) 18 mm thick. Since the author's design will stand close to the wall. In the lower corners adjacent to the walls, I cut out places for the plinth. To make the screws easy to screw in, I drilled for each hole with a diameter of 2 mm. First, he screwed on the side panels, in front they go “flush” with the frame, then he fixed the front panel, it is solid and covers the sides of the side panels.
Since the author's seats will be folding, he decided to fix an additional part, on which he will then fix the hinges. This detail is a board (in the first drawing, the size is 2280x100x18 mm). The part was fastened not flush with the outer edge of the frame, but with a whip to close the protruding edges of the side panels. For this, he used metal corners (6 of them were required) and self-tapping screws (screws 3.5 to 20 mm in size). Fastening was made under the part and to the edge of the frame. This can be clearly seen in the photo.
At this stage, the author painted the panels from the outside with a matte dark gray paint. Before that, he masked the grooves and screw heads with a mixture of putty. What he did not plan to paint, he sealed with masking tape. I also painted separately the top cover panels on only one side – the top.

At the final stage, the author installed the finished structure in the place where it was supposed to flock, put all the necessary things that he planned into it. To make it comfortable to sit on the sofa bench, I ordered foam cushions covered with dense green fabric, installed three pieces along the wall and put three more on the covers. As you can see in the photo, the cavity inside the sofa is solid, but according to the author, it can be divided into compartments, for example, according to the size of the covers, but this is at your discretion. It all depends on what you store in it.
