Today I want to tell you about an injection gas burner. When forging knives, I usually use a bituminous forge because I think the quality of the finished blade when forged with coal or wood is much better than with a gas forge. I don’t know why I had such an opinion, but I adhere to it. I thought about the gas forge because after the forging of the blade, the forge carcass and locksmith work can take more than one day, and therefore, because of 5 minutes to harden the blade, reignite the forge.
Since the coal furnace does not quickly ignite, it can take more than one hour to harden the blade, and it will not be difficult to burn a semi-finished product, it has already spoiled good steel more than once. And in a gas furnace it is much easier to control the temperature and heating zone, and the gas furnace reaches the operating temperature very quickly. Only one drawback is that liquefied gas cools down very much when consumed, and the operating pressure drops, but this is solved simply by heating the cylinder. There is a large number of types and shapes of burners on the net, after a little searching, I still found a suitable option for me, carefully studied how it all works and proceeded to manufacture.

Getting started
Me decided not to take the exact size and everything is done by eye. For the nozzle, I took a 32 mm tube, and to make it narrower, I made four cuts with a thin cutting disc – I approached a little with a hammer and made a cut again. I adjusted the nozzle under the 20 mm tube so that there was a smooth transition. From the second edge of the tube, I do not cut anything yet, as there is already a narrowing there, then after the first ignition, if necessary, saw through.
After fitting the pipe, I weld everything with electric welding, do not judge me too much, I am not a welder and I grind all the seams with a grinder. The total length of the flat tube was 6 cm. Now it was the turn to the main tube, I measured 15 cm with a tape measure and cut off the excess, I don’t know if 15 cm is enough, but oh well I’ll try. Next, you need to do it, I do not know what is the correct name for the transition from 32 mm to 20 mm, many simply cut out and weld according to the pattern, or simply take a ready-made plumbing transition. Well, I looked, and found a ready-made one that was suitable in size. I don't know the transition from what, but it is what I need. I try it on, just after grinding, it is put on a 20 mm pipe. I check everything again and weld everything into place by welding, and cut off the edge a few centimeters. Well, the main body of the burner is ready, there are little things left, but very important ones.

From metal 2 mm I cut a strip 1 cm long, and a padded one, adhering to the size of the expansion. I drill an 8 mm hole in the center, and the bolt itself will be 5 mm, so it will be possible to center the jet. The jet itself was twisted from the gas stove from the burner, which we do not use, I did not tell my wife – of course I plugged the hole.
I take a bolt 4 cm long and 5 mm in diameter and with a 4 mm drill I drill a hole in the center for the first time I did not succeed on the second bolt the operation was successful. I cut a thread for the jet into the hole and tighten it that's all. I weld the eyelet with the hole in its place, I center everything by eye and weld everything, I try it on in its place.
Since the jet is long, I had to be smart with the damper. Usually, the head is cut off from the bolt and the washer is screwed on, and thus the air flow can be adjusted, but I did differently from a sheet of iron I cut out the flap of the desired shape, and bent it at a right angle in the center, where the jet will drill a hole.
To adjust the air flow, I make a cut for the bolt from the side, and weld the bolt onto the burner itself, when adjusting the air flow, I just loosen the nut and that's it. Well, almost everything is assembled into place, I put the gas supply hose right on the rest of the bolt on the nozzle. It's time to try it.

I looked on the Internet and decided to use the advice, and made four cuts on the nozzle, and reduced the diameter to 18 mm and ignited it again – this did not work – the flame also broke off. Now I decided to make a so-called sight. I made four cuts and cut two strips out of a sheet of metal, set them in the form of a cross and welded everything. I thought it would definitely help, I started it again and again the same thing, but better than it was.
I asked a question on the forum and I was advised to drill a few holes of 4 mm, five pieces on the nozzle, slightly stepping back from the edge. I drilled it, now I need a small piece of pipe that will fit on the nozzle, but the holes on it will be opened so I did it. I lit the burner with a new one and everything worked – when the pressure rises, there is no separation, everything burns with a blue flame – I am satisfied.
Well, I’m still working on a grinder for show, and the whole burner is ready after four hours of torment.
In general, I am satisfied with the work of the burner – everything suits the temperature and gives a good one, of course it will not work for Damascus steel, and I do not need such a temperature for hardening. It didn’t take much, but this burner burned up my brain: the hardest thing is those expansions on the nozzle. Well, and so, I think it was worthwhile to assemble such a necessary thing from two pieces of pipe, and not any costs, only he eats a lot of gas, and so the first hardening was successful, even tried to forge a knife from a piece of bearing, it seems normal, but still fire in a gas furnace not as clean and warm as in a coal furnace. I will forge only on coal well, and produce hardening with today's homemade products.
