Do-it-yourself belt sander for a grinder

Belt grinders and hand-held machines are one of the most common types of such devices. Of course, not everyone needs a whole park of machines and machines in a workshop. Often enough, a minimal “garage” set in the form of a welder, a pair of grinders and screwdrivers is enough.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Master Sh” will tell you how to make a belt grinding adapter for a grinder, consisting of a minimum of parts.
This the project is not very difficult to manufacture, although it requires a certain amount of welding work.
Materials necessary for home-made.

Manufacturing process.
Some of the main components for this device are a pair of rollers. They can be made in a variety of ways, including turning. The author offers his own version, which will require trimming of plastic water pipes.
A bushing of a reinforced-plastic pipe is glued into a section of a thick-walled pipe, on a two-component epoxy glue, and bearings are inserted from both sides.
For the second, driving roller, pipe cuttings are soldered into the coupling. For this, an apparatus for welding PP pipes is used.

After the part has cooled down, excess pipes are cut flush with the edges of the coupling. So the master reduced the inner diameter of the coupling so that the elongated nut m14 would fit tightly into it.

Now an extended nut m14 is pressed into this roller. The master carries out this operation on a homemade press. You can learn about its production from the recent article .

The resulting roller blank is screwed onto the grinder shaft.
Grinder is fixed on the workbench, the engine is turned on, and the edges of the roller are neatly rounded with a file.
This is followed by sanding the roller with fine sandpaper. So the author gets a balanced video, which has no beats, without using a lathe.
The master makes the clamp for attaching the device to the grinder from the housing from the shock absorber. Here is just the required inner diameter of the “pipe”.
The petal is bent at an angle of 90 degrees relative to the ring.

Now you need to cut the ring, screw a couple of nuts onto the bolt, and grab them to the ends of the clamp. After unscrewing the screw, you need to drill a thread in one of the nuts.

A square shaped tube will serve as the body of the device. At one of its ends, lugs are formed for the driven (tension) roller.
Having rounded the corners, the author drills a through hole for the axle bolt.
This the part is cut off from the pipe at an angle of 45 degrees.
A counterpart is cut out of a pipe of a smaller section. Its end is damped, and the thickness is increased by welding two corners in its front part (near the dummy end).

After inserting one part into another, you need to drown out the end between the lugs.

Now you can weld the mount near the open end of the inner rail.

Almost everything is ready, you can fix the tension roller in its place.
This is how both parts of the tensioning mechanism are connected to each other. The tension of the sanding belt will be provided by a compression spring inserted into the pipe with a tension roller.
To protect the metal from corrosion, the author temporarily removed the video and painted the parts with enamel. He sanded down the outer walls that would be in contact with the moving belt and did not paint.
He made two holes in the side wall of the tension roller holder, and cut m3 threads into them.
Now you can assemble the device.
Washers are placed between the roller and the lugs.

A these two screws will adjust the skew of the guide – this will allow you to adjust the tape so that it does not slide to the side.
It remains to fix the nozzle on the grinder, screw on the drive roller, and tighten the sanding belt.
