Joe Biden appears to forget name of Defense Secretary
The US President described the occasion in an interview while also warning the Russian leader he will “pay the price” for allegedly interfering in the 2020 election. US intelligence agencies believe Russia attempted to interfere in last year’s election, with Moscow seeking re-election of Donald Trump.
In an interview with ABC News, Mr Biden said he believes Mr Putin is a “killer” and recalled telling the Russian President to his face he has no soul.
Previous reports said the then-Vice President told Mr Putin in 2011 he does not “have a soul”, which Mr Biden confirmed.
He added: “I wasn’t being a wise guy, I was alone with him in his office, that’s how it came about.
“It was when President [George W.] Bush had said I’ve looked in his eyes and saw his soul.
“I said I looked in your eyes and I don’t think you have a soul. And he looked back and said, ‘we understand each other’.”
White House sources were asked about the report, and said Mr Biden was clear on his stance on potential interference in his first phone call as President with Mr Putin.
One office told NBC News the US President “has been clear that the United States will respond to a number of destabilising Russian actions”.
