DIY loft floor lamp
Hello, dear readers and homemade products!
Perhaps some of you are just looking for an interesting version of a floor lamp (floor lamp), or are already going to buy it in a store. Quite often, floor lamp designs are really difficult to manufacture, require welding or forging.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “ThisWoodwork” will tell you about making a tripod stand – the basis for a floor lamp.
The proposed stand has a really simple design, and you can assemble it from materials available in a hardware store. Despite the lathe used by the master, it is quite possible to do without it.
In the previous article the author has already told how to make a large fabric lampshade.
Materials needed for homemade products.
– Copper pipes
– Wooden round timber, board, sandpaper
– Wax waterproof impregnation for wood
– LED Edison lamps.
Tools used by the author.
– Hand-held milling cutter, cutters with thrust bearing
– Band saw
– Belt-grinding machine
– Drilling machine, Forstner drills
– Digital vernier caliper
– Joiner's vise
– Miter box, deburring knife
– Tape measure, marker, compasses.
Manufacturing process.
So, the main material for this project will be copper tubes with a diameter of 50 mm. Of course, this is a very expensive and capricious material, and it can be replaced with anodized aluminum tubes (here the color range is very wide), or polished steel furniture tubes.
First of all, the author aligns one edge of the three tubes folded together, and winds them up with tape.
The second edge of three tubes at once is cut off on a miter saw, and blanks for legs of the same length are obtained. Instead of “trimming”, you can do with a grinder or an ordinary miter box and a hacksaw for metal.
The ends of the pipes must be deburred with sandpaper, or removed with a special knife. In the second case, there is less risk of scratching the surface of the tubes.
Now you need make a cross, in which the upper edges of the tubes will be fixed.
Putting them in the “working” position, the author measures the distance between the centers of the holes. In this case, 150 mm will be the optimal distance.
compasses, cutting the board, the author draws a circle with a radius of 86.5 mm.
A small circle is also marked in center.
the centers of the holes through which the tubes will pass, and the future part is given an ergonomic shape.
The workpiece is cut out using a band saw, or a regular electric jigsaw.
Although this detail will be hidden by the lampshade, the author smooths its edges on the machine.
Arranging the workpiece (upside down) at an angle of about 15 degrees to the table of the drilling machine, inclined blind holes are made in it for the tubes. This uses a Forstner drill of the same diameter as the tubes.
On the upper side, in the center of the cross, a recess is made for the cartridge. A hole for the wire is drilled from below.
As a result, the upper part of the structure is assembled as follows.
So far, the assembled structure can freely tilt in different directions. One more detail is required to lock them in position.
For sample he drilled such a hole in the board so that three tubes would fit tightly into it at once.
By sliding the latch to the desired height, you can turn the tubes back to the required position and put the cross on them .
Now the design does not dangle, and it can even be lifted by one leg.
So, the most important thing in the retainer is the hole through which the tubes pass. The external shape of the part can be almost any (even a cube, even a ball). Roughly speaking, instead of a retainer, the tubes can be reeled up at the point of intersection with the rope. It all depends on your imagination.
The master decided to make this detail in the form of a ring. A through hole of the corresponding diameter is drilled in a thick board (from hard deciduous varieties).
Surplus wood cut with a band saw.
Further processing rings are made on a lathe.
After processing, and having sanded one side, the author turns the workpiece over and repeats the procedure.

At the end, the part is waxed or impregnated with mineral oil.
The lower ends of the tubes remained open. This will require plastic or wooden plugs.
The author also decided to resort to the help of a lathe, and turned three elongated legs.
During milling, the diameter of the plug shank must be strictly observed so that it fits snugly into the tube. Its author controls with a digital caliper .

The ends of the legs are trimmed on the banding machine.
Give rounded the shape of the edges of the cross can be done with a hand router. The author fixes it in a carpentry vice upside down, and processes the part from both sides with a radius cutter with a thrust bearing.
Follows hand grinding of the crosspiece surfaces.
Before the final assembly, a through hole is drilled in one of the grooves for the tubes in the crosspiece through which the power wire will pass.
Also, a hole for the wire is drilled in the lower part of one of the tubes.

Copper – a very beautiful metal, however, over time it darkens, becoming covered with a patina. To avoid this, the author rubs the surfaces of the tubes with a wax waterproof paste. There will be no such problems with anodized aluminum.
Open the bottom ends are clogged with stubs.
Now you can pull the power wire through one of the tubes. Here you need to be careful not to damage the insulation on the edges of the hole.
From above, the wire is passed through the crosspiece, and it is put on the tubes.
The crosspiece will be practically invisible and covered with a lampshade. The end of the wire is wrapped in a loop and passed through the central hole in the crosspiece. It remains to connect it to the cartridge.
The stand is ready, you can hang a lampshade on it and screw in a light bulb … In the previous article, the author has already described how to do it.
a simple and beautiful floor lamp turned out by the master.
Thank the author for the master class on making a floor lamp in the loft style with a shade.
