Since 1998, about 380 leaders and volunteers who helped the Baptist Church, are accused of sexual violations.
These are the results of a comprehensive investigation conducted by the editions of The Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News. Reporters learned that, over the past 20 years, more than 700 of the victims were subjected to cruel treatment and sexual harassment, and some of them were urged to have an abortion and to forgive their rapists. The investigation included “the study of databases of Federal and state courts, prison records and official documents from more than 20 States and search for the registries of perpetrators of sexual offences across the country.”
Only Texas newspaper interviewed police officers and district prosecutors in 40 districts. “In the end, we collected information on 380 the leaders of the southern Baptist churches, including pastors, deacons, Sunday school teachers and volunteers. 220 of them are already convicted of sexual offences, or received a deferred prosecution,” writes the press.
