When cutting paper templates, sometimes you need to make an incision along an arc or circle. An ordinary compass in this situation is not a very good helper, because after it you will have to use scissors.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Ohyo56” will tell you about making a craft compass with a cutter.
Besides simple cutting out patterns from paper or cardboard, this device will be a good helper in carpentry work. They can easily cut the fibers, preparing the part for further processing with a chisel.

So, the main material for this project will be trimming boards and battens from hard deciduous wood.
First, the master cuts the blanks, and the first of them will be needed to make a movable carriage with a central tip.
The resulting block is dissolved in thickness.
From thin 3 -mm strips, a blank for the guide is cut out. The maximum possible working radius of the compass will depend on its length.
A guide blank is laid out next to the saw blade, and the blade overhang is set equal to its thickness.

Using a carriage with side stops, the master forms two slots at the edges of the future groove.
Attaching a bar to block, you need to check that the slots are at the right distance, and the bar will not play. Only after that, in several passes, the excess wood is removed from the groove.
Now you can reduce the thickness of the part, and the base of the carriage is ready.
A small block is applied to the U-shaped base, and is adjusted in size. This will be the cutter holder.
Make a through groove in the holder to fix the guide in it. The contours of the future groove can be marked based on the boundaries of the groove in the carriage.
A rectangular hole in a block can be made in different ways, for example, by drilling a series of holes.
After drilling finish the groove with a file.
The workpiece is fixed on a flat board using double-sided tape.
On both sides of the workpiece, the author put two lining strips, and already on them – a special guide for a hand router. About making a similar guide was described in one of the articles.
Between the sides of the guide the bounding block is fixed – it will not allow making the groove longer than the specified one.
Using a hand router with a straight cutter for wood , the author makes a long groove in the guide. Its thickness is small and can be done in one pass.
Insert the guide into carriage, the author marks the center of the screw hole with an awl.
The hole is drilled with the expectation of subsequent threading M4.

The part is fixed in a carpenter's vise and an M4 thread is cut with a tap.
You will also need a clamp a nut with a wing head.
A master cuts a cylinder of a suitable diameter from a bar. To avoid injury when drilling with a crown, the part must be fixed in a machine vice.
A notch is made at the edges of the blank. Here you can use a band saw, jigsaw or file.
An M4 riveting nut is pressed into the hole using a vise. In order not to damage the sponges, it is better to put a plate under the nut.
Of course, you can take a ready-made Bakelite wing nut .
Now you can give the carriage a more convenient shape. The contours are marked with a pencil and the excess material is cut with a band saw.
The edge of the guide is sharpened somewhat, and it is hammered into the head with a mallet.
Holding the head in a vice flush with the jaws, the master marks the edges of the cutout for installing the blade.

Having fixed the part in the screwdriver chuck, the author sharpens the point on the orbital sander while simultaneously rotating the workpiece.
Two holes are drilled at the top and bottom of the carriage for attaching the tip and a small handle.

Drilled into the handle hole, and half of the screw is screwed into it.
The second half of the screw is screwed into the carriage.
Almost everything is ready, it remains to perform a fine grinding of the parts, and, if desired, soak them with linseed oil. This will not only show the beautiful wood pattern, but also protect the tool from moisture.
Last the tip is screwed into place in the carriage.
The compasses are assembled as follows. First, an M4 screw is screwed in from the back of the carriage.
A guide and a washer are put on the screw, after which a homemade wing nut is screwed on.
