Hello, dear readers and DIY!
When working on a circular saw, it is often necessary to cut out small parts, observing an angle of 90 degrees. In this case, the rip fence is not a very good helper, and you have to use additional devices to work comfortably and safely.
In this article, Glen, the author of the YouTube channel “DIY Creators”, will tell you how to make one of the options for the cross carriage. It is equipped with an adjustable side stop, which allows you to quickly cut workpieces of the same size.
It is quite easy to make such a carriage even in a small carpentry workshop, using the same circular saw and screwdriver .
Materials for DIY.
– Thick plywood
– Slider for T-track
– Adjustable angle stop for T-track
– Bakelite wing nuts
– Furniture cut-in nuts
– Self-adhesive measuring tape
– Joiner's glue, acrylic lacquer, sandpaper, self-tapping screws on wood.
Tools used by the author.
– Circular saw, saw blades
– Screwdriver, wood drills – – Electric nayler
– Orbital sander
– Set of silicone tools for glue application
– Adjustable combined ruler 3 in 1, Svenson's square
– Tape measure, pencil, brush, screwdriver.
So, the main material for the carriage will be 20 mm plywood. It should be borne in mind that the maximum saw blade overhang will decrease to the same height.
First of all, the author cuts off two strips for the base of the carriage and the stop.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738570_tssl-024.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Both strips are shortened in length, and at the same time their ends are aligned.
The strip intended for the stop is dissolved in two parts. One part should be wider than the other by the thickness of the plywood used (in this case, 20 mm).
В the base of the carriage will have a T-rail embedded by cutting out the mounting slot. The saw blade is lowered to the height of the T-track.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738550_tssl-037.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Now , sliding the parallel stop to the saw blade, and, in several passes, a groove for the guide is cut along the entire width of the base.
The T-track must fit snugly into place and be flush with the upper surface of the base.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738544_tssl-050.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Both strips of the stop are glued together. To avoid displacement of the elements, the master shoots them with nails using a nailer .
If you do not have a nailer, you can use a simple trick. After applying the glue, a very small amount of coarse salt crystals are poured onto one of the parts. So, during compression with clamps, the parts will not float relative to each other. The salt will dissolve quickly enough and the potential gap will disappear.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738614_tssl-059.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> < a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738604_tssl-065.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Glue is applied to both edges of the formed “step”, and the stop is pressed against the edge of the base.
Here the author drives only one nail near the corner (from the side of the sole of the base point-blank), and pulls the parts together with clamps.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738532_tssl-077.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Already during gluing it is worth checking the angle formed by the stop and the base. It should be strictly 90 degrees.
This carriage is specifically designed for 90-degree cuts, although its base will be adjustable corner stop with guide for T-track .
Here you can do without an adjustable stop, simply by rigidly fixing the rail to the bottom of the carriage.
The stop angle is set at 90 degrees to the saw blade using the Svenson square .
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738591_tssl-084.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Having placed the carriage in the position in which it will work, the author marks the centers of the holes for the mountings.
furniture cut-in nuts are screwed in, and already in them – a couple of screws.
Now you can fix the carriage on the stop.
Next , in one or two passes (without shifting to the sides), a working slot is formed both in the base and in the lower part of the bead. The height of the side must be sufficient to ensure the rigidity of the structure.
Two strips 2-3 mm long are cut out of the T-shaped guide, shorter than the grooves in the carriage … This is necessary so that they do not get caught on the saw blade.
From cutting the plywood strip the master glues the L-shaped part of the side limiter.
Noting on the workpiece, the center line of the T-track, in this place a hole is drilled for the clamping bolt.
Insert a T-bolt into the hole, slide a washer over it and screw on a wing nut.
The T-bolt head slides into the slot and the side restraint is ready.

After the varnish has dried, T-tracks are installed in the grooves, and screwed with countersunk head screws.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738596_tssl-144.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> For the convenience of adjusting the limiter, you need to apply markings, or just glue a self-adhesive measuring tape .
The” zero “of the tape must be strictly at the edge of the saw blade slot.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738541_tssl-154.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> < a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738625_tssl-156.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> < a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-04/1619738602_tssl-160.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> To check the carriage, the master cuts out a square part.
As a result, all angles are exactly 90 degrees, which is required from this carriage.
Additional limiters can be fixed on the carriage stop using clamps. You can also place another T-track on the stop – this will expand the functionality of the carriage.
The author also recommends moving the T-track at the base closer to the stop. This will reduce the side limiter play.
Thanks to Glen for the simple design of the circular saw carriage .
