If you have ever tried to clean metal pipes from rust, or paint with an ordinary grinder, then you know how laborious this task is. Here the efficiency of most disc brushes and other attachments turns out to be low.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Master Sh” will tell you how to make an adapter for a sanding belt that turns a grinder into a kind of “grinder” (this is how it became popular to call belt sanders) .
This device is suitable for a range of other similar tasks.
This project is not very difficult to manufacture, but it will require a certain amount of welding work.
Materials required for DIY.
– Bearings, elongated nut m14
– Steel profile pipe, compression spring
– Plastic water pipes, couplings for polypropylene pipes
– Old car shock absorber
– Aerosol primer, paint
– Sanding belts.
Tools used by the author.

– Ratchet tap holder, tap
– Soldering iron for plastic pipes < br> – Pliers, vice, press, mallet

So, first of all, the master makes a crimp clamp on which the guides will be attached. Under the diameter of the seat of the protective casing on the grinder, a body from a car shock absorber is excellent.
A ring with two petals is marked on the trimming of such a body.
The workpiece is fixed in a vice, and the necessary part is cut out with a grinder.
Then the petals are given such a curved shape.
Two nuts need to be welded near the cut on the ring. Having tried on the clamp for the grinder, the author slightly unbends the ring.
The nuts are screwed onto the bolt at some distance from each other and welded to the clamp.
For convenience, the author uses welder's magnetic corner .
After welding, all clamp surfaces and seams are cleaned.
The thread in one of the nuts is drilled with a drill or screwdriver.
The clamping bolt must pass through it freely.
The author uses a bolt with a head for an inbus key. The excess thread is cut off with a grinder. After cutting, you need to restore the thread by removing the chamfer.
Next, two blanks with lengths of 100 and 50 mm are cut out of a steel square 10 × 10 mm. The first of them will serve as one of the guides, and the second is suitable for the stock.
The stem should move inside the second guide (made of a square shaped tube 15 × 15 mm) with practically no backlash.
To eliminate the gap, the author cut out from the same pipe corner, and welded it to the stock.
As a result, the stock moves freely inside the guide.
Now each of the guides is welded to the clamp petals. It is important to observe an angle of 90 degrees between the guide and the imaginary axis of the grinder's spindle.
Holes are drilled at the ends of the rod and the guide. < br> M8 threads are cut in the holes obtained. Before slicing, the master applies a little oil.
The master makes the tension rollers for the sanding belt from scraps of water-supply plastic pipes and couplings.
bearings are pressed on both sides of the couplings.
The roller attachment for the grinder spindle is soldered from two pipe and coupling scraps.
After soldering the pipes into the sleeve, their excess is cut flush with the edges of the connector. The ends of the cylinder are ground on a belt machine, or by hand.
Now you need to press the extended nut m14 into the received part. Here the author uses a homemade press clamp, about the manufacture of which was described in a recent article.
If you do not have such a press, then you can use a powerful vice.
The finished frame is cleaned, degreased, and painted with an aerosol paint.
Small (driven) idler rollers are bolted to the ends of the rail and stem. Lock nuts are screwed and tightened on the ends of the bolts.
A compression spring is inserted into the guide from the professional pipe, and then a stem with video.
Now you can remove the protective casing from the grinder, and install in its place ready adapter.
The drive roller is screwed on the spindle last.
It remains to pull the sanding belt , pressing tension roller, and the device is ready to work.
Of course, it is recommended to use it only with a grinder with speed control.
This mechanism allows you to create a larger contact patch of the sanding belt with the pipe surface.
The effect is most noticeable when processing large diameter pipes.
