Hello dear readers and DIY!
Some of you have probably thought about purchasing or making your own garden grill.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Gonzalo Ré” will tell you how he made a garden charcoal grill from a barrel.
Such a project is quite simple, and even a novice welder can master it.
Materials necessary for homemade products.
– Steel corner, bar
– Metal barrel – Board, timber, self-tapping screws for wood
– Refractory blocks, ball hinges – Teak oil, heat-resistant aerosol enamel, sandpaper
Tools used by the author
– Screwdriver – Angle adapter for screwdriver – Welding machine, welding mask – – Magnetic corners of the welder, hammer, metal brush
– Circular or hand-held circular saw
– Building level, Svenson's square – – Roulette, combined square, marker
– Protective gloves.
So, the master took a barrel of sunflower oil as the basis for the barbecue. First of all, he cuts the barrel with a grinder into two identical halves in the plane of the axis.
When cutting a barrel with a grinder or in other ways, you must observe safety precautions! The accumulated vapors can be explosive! Taking into account the dimensions of the barrel halves, the master cuts frame elements from a steel corner 20 × 20 mm. The ends are cut at an angle of 45 degrees.
Parts of the frame laid out on a flat surface, and welded in the corners. The dimensions of this frame in this case are 501 × 396 mm.
Having turned the frame, the master removes chamfers at the joints to obtain a high-quality seam.
Having welded the seams apart from the outer corners, you need to remove the slag and clean the surfaces with a metal brush.
As a result half of the barrel should go inside the frame. Now it can be welded, and at the same time go through the outer corners of the frame.
The master does the same with the second half of the barrel (the part with the filling hole is taken for the grill lid).
In order not to lead the structure and not to burn through thin metal, along the perimeter, the container is attached to the frame only at a few points.
Further, four legs 850 mm long are cut out of a steel corner 25 × 25 × 3 mm.
The legs are welded to the frame with an overlap. Provided that the frame lies on a horizontal table top, the correct installation of the legs can be checked with the building level .
Having put the structure in its regular position, the master cleans the upper surface of the frame, paying special attention to the corners.
The following elements from a steel corner – two U-shaped frames for side shelves (402 × 200 mm). The master controls their geometry with a Svenson square, although it is much more practical to use welder's magnetic corners when assembling metal structures.
Putting the building level on the edges of the barbecue, the frames for the shelves are aligned and welded in turn .
Next, after measuring the distance between the posts, a rectangular frame (501 × 396 mm) is welded for the bottom shelf .
each of the posts the desired height, you can insert a frame between them, and weld it.
The next frame made of corners is designed to hold refractory blocks.
This frame with blocks will be the “second bottom” of the grill, protecting the bottom of the barrel from burning out and deformation.
The grill frame should go inside the sides of the barbecue with a small gap. Its dimensions are 451 × 346 mm.
The grill grate is cut from 8 mm steel bar.
To weld the rods to the frame with the same pitch (20 mm), the author uses a wooden beam as spacers.
Now four brackets are cut out of the corner, on which the grille will be held.
These parts are welded to the internal frame edges.
The metal bottom of the barbecue is ready. You need to attach a lid from the second half of the barrel to it.
Having set the lid in place, ball hinges are welded to the frame of the lid and barbecue.
To make the hot grate easy to remove, it needs a pair of handles. Two steel bars must be welded to the front of the frame.
To do this, a couple of holes are drilled in the frame rib, bars are inserted and welded into them.
On the front side of the barbecue, you need to make two slots for the rods. It is better to do this with a thick grinding wheel.
A couple of holes are drilled in the lid for attaching the handle.
A pair of corners are fixed on the lid with bolts.
All surfaces of the structure are painted with heat-resistant aerosol enamel.
Of course, the barrel should have been initially cleaned of factory paint …
The master makes the handles from a wooden bar. The circular saw blade is installed at an inclination of 45 degrees, and all four edges of the bar are cut off.
As a result an octagonal blank is obtained.
The part is fixed in a carpenter's vice, and the edges are constrained < u> hand plane .
Now you can take measurements and cut handles on them.
Centers are marked on the ends of the handles, and holes for rods are drilled.
Also parts for the side and bottom shelves are cut from the 20-mm board.
Impregnation of the received parts are made with teak oil prior to installation.
The grate handles are pressed onto the bars, and the lid handle is screwed to the corners with a pair of self-tapping screws.
< a href = "https://usamodelkina.ru/uploads/posts/2021-06/1622670462_bqq-343.jpg" rel = "prettyPhoto"> Within mounting holes are drilled along the perimeter of the shelves, and the planks are screwed on from the bottom side with short self-tapping screws. The gaps between the boards are 3 mm.
In order not to overturn the barbecue, the master screws the lower shelf boards using the corner adapter .
To install the wheels, I had to shorten two legs a little and drill holes in them.
This is a garden grill made by a Spanish master. This is one of the simple, and at the same time practical designs.
Of course, for compactness, you can make both side shelves foldable. To do this, instead of U-shaped frames, you will have to make solid ones, and attach them to the main structure with loops.
Everything is ready, you can start a fire and cook food.
I thank the author for the master class on making a garden grill from a barrel.
