Most often, when drilling holes, you have to maintain an angle of 90 degrees. If this condition is mandatory, a drilling machine is used. There are also a variety of jigs and guides that can replace a bulky drilling machine in many cases.
In this article, John, YouTube author of “John Heisz – I Build It”, will tell you how he made a portable “drilling machine” based on a screwdriver. simply put – a guide for drilling holes at an angle of 90 degrees.
This project is quite simple to manufacture, and it is not necessary to modify the design of the screwdriver – it can be quickly removed and used for its intended purpose.

First of all, you should pay attention to the fact that each new similar unit is somewhat different from its counterparts, including in its configuration (the latter circumstance should be specially taken into account in our project). Therefore, before proceeding with the design of the outer case of the future drilling machine, the author strongly recommends marking the center of the axis on the back of the case so that you can properly align the device.
To do this, a very even steel axis or a pin along which a wooden guide is exposed, extending the contour of the device.
After that, using a dial gauge , measurements are taken, measured offset from the axis. The last indicator is transferred to the back wall of the screwdriver body. This mark will come in handy when creating a screwdriver holder.
Further, with the same caliper, the diameter of the neck on the front of the screwdriver is measured. Not every device has this part, but in this model it is present, and the master intends to derive some benefit from it when designing a frame for a drilling machine.
The frame itself will be made primarily of plywood. And you should start from the front, “bow” part. On the front panel a Forstner drill drills a hole with a precisely specified diameter.

Excess corners of the workpiece are cut off with a miter saw.
Then the top panel of the screwdriver holder is cut out of the 6mm plywood. It should be slightly wider than the “clamp”, and the protruding edges will act as guides.
Both segments are connected at an angle of 90 degrees, pilot holes are prepared at the connection with a wood drill with countersink. Then the parts are fastened together with 20 mm countersunk screws.
The resulting structural element is put on the device.
Now you can proceed to the manufacture of fasteners for the rear of the case. First you need to make a lining between the top panel and the body. This gap is clearly 6 mm. A strip of plywood is selected for this size, or the trim of the strip is adjusted so that it fits exactly into the given opening.
Next, two lateral supports are cut from a hardwood bar.

Then exactly such a plate is applied to the opposite ends of the bars, and is also attached for self-tapping screws.
Using a homemade carriage, the master cuts off the protruding parts of the bars.
Now the resulting part is attached to the panel with longer screws.
At this stage, you can try on – insert a screwdriver into the forming frame and check its fit.
The lower bar will play the role of a fastener that fixes the screwdriver in the holder.
In this position, the metal rod is again inserted into the chuck and the distance to the surface of the workbench at the beginning and end of the rod is checked with a suitable block. It should be the same and exactly such that the bar only touches the core a little.
Next, a cut of 18-mm plywood is taken, from which two identical racks. The latter will be attached to the base of the fixture.
For the rails in the uprights, cut through 6 mm mating grooves. The whole procedure is carried out on a circular machine using a parallel stop.
John uses another 6mm plate to secure both rails together.
The upper and lower edges of the racks are trimmed after assembly.
At this stage it is important to check that all structural elements are strictly at right angles to each other. The more accurate this fit is, the more accurate your holes will be. Of course, the check should be done before the final build takes place.
You can now insert the movable carriage holder into the main body.
Optionally, you can cut corners on the sides of the segments. However, this will not affect the properties of the mechanism itself, but will only pursue an aesthetic goal.
The last step is to create the base (sole) of the rack. It will take a cut of 20 mm plywood. The author uses a homemade flat compass to draw a semicircle contour, and a small paint can to draw the remaining contour elements.
To cut a notch, the master uses a band saw, although you can do with electric or manual jigsaw.
It remains to drill pilot holes and screw the sole to the uprights.
Further, if you wish, you can stick such rubber strips on the underside of the base to provide the device with better grip on the working surface.
In addition, the author adds a return spring to the structure in order to create an opposing force that would return the moving part of the device to its original position.
To check the device in operation, the master put a 30-mm Forstner drill , and made a hole in a thick board with it.
