In recent years, a compact belt sander, popularly nicknamed “grinder”, has been rapidly gaining popularity. Its functionality is quite wide – from sharpening knives and a variety of tools to carpentry.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Master Sh” will tell you how he made a belt sander based on an electric motor from sewing machine.
This project is simple enough to be repeated in a workshop setting with a welding machine. With some changes in the design, you can do without the latter.
Materials necessary for home-made.
– Electric motor 220V, 12000 rpm, spare version
– Gas lift for furniture
– Sheet steel 3 mm, bolts, nuts, washers
– Plastic water pipes, steel square 15 × 15 mm
– Two-component epoxy adhesive, machine oil, spray paint
– Abrasive “coral” grinding disc
– Grinding belts.

The rollers are important structural elements of the belt mechanism. In different designs of grinding machines, their number varies from two to four (sometimes more, but rarely).
The master will assemble the structure on three rollers. They can be turned on a lathe, or made from plastic water pipes, which is what the author does.
Given the width of the tape, three identical roller bodies are cut out. You will also need two short reinforced plastic pipe sleeves, and one the same length as the body.
The reinforced plastic pipe should be selected so that it fits snugly inside the PVC pipe.
A long sleeve is glued into the drive roller, on two-component epoxy glue.
Short bushings are glued inside the two driven rollers, and are pressed at the edges immediately bearings . Bushings are used here for economy – if desired, several bearings can be pressed into the housing.
As a result, we get two slaves and one leading video. Unfortunately, the wizard did not give detailed dimensions, but they can be easily selected on their own.
Such a 220V electric motor will serve as the heart of the machineused for sewing machines. With a power of 200W, it develops up to 12,000 rpm (just such an engine is given here, the author uses a 180W model, 10,000 rpm).
A pulley is installed on the motor shaft, on which the drive roller will be put on. If desired and possible, the pulley can be replaced with a clutch . This will provide a secure and coaxial mount.
The foreman unscrews the gougeon and removes the pulley.
Instead of a gougeon, a long screw is selected, and a radial hole is drilled in the video for it.
The screw is adjusted in length so that in the clamped position it does not protrude beyond the surface of the roller.
Now the roller, together with the pulley pressed into it, is put on the shaft and fixed with a screw.
The master makes the bed from sheet steel 3 + mm thick. Its dimensions in this case are 220 × 150 mm.
Having retreated from the corners by 20 mm along the wide side, holes are drilled in the workpiece.
Threads are cut in them using a tap .
Both driven rollers are bolted to the bed.
A sanding belt is encircled around the rollers, and stretched by the drive roller … This position marks the center of the leading video.
Using a metal bit , the master drills a bore hole for engine.
Two holes are made next to the hole for fastening pins.
One of the driven rollers will be responsible for the belt tension, and unlike the others, it should be able to move relative to the bed. And not only in the vertical plane, but also have tilt adjustment.
To solve this problem, the master cuts a segment in the upper part of the plate together with a mounting hole.
The remaining square part with a hole will have two hinged joints with the bed through an additional plate. < br> door hinge .
Here the author forms a hinge from nuts and a bolt.
A hole is drilled in the received part and the bed for the connecting bolt. It will play the role of an axis.
An enlarged washer is placed between the bed and the “flag”, and the parts are connected by a bolt with a nut.
To be able to change the tilt of the roller (with its help, the belt travel is adjusted so that it does not slide off the rollers), the author drilled a hole in the plate, cut a thread, and screwed an adjusting screw into it.
The role of the automatic tape tensioner will be played by the gas furniture lift .
Using a homemade bending machine, the master forms an arc from a steel square.
Two supports for the bed are cut from the received blank.
In the center of the upper part of the supports, a slot is made the same width as the thickness of the bed.
The bed is inserted into the slots and welded to the uprights. To maintain an angle of 90 degrees, the author uses magnetic corners .
In the front of the machine, you need to weld a base plate along which the sanding belt will slide.
The next element is a small turntable, its master cut it out of a 10-mm steel plate, and used an elongated nut and bolt as fastening.
Before welding the nut to the bed, and the bolt head to the corner of the table, you need to align the position of the latter in several planes .
So, the machine frame and all its elements are ready. You can clean, degrease, and apply a protective coat of aerosol enamel.
The tension roller lever is fixed on the bed first.
Then gas furniture lift is attached to them.
As you can see, when you press the lever, it descends smoothly with a sufficiently large effort.
The tensioner roller is now installed. The bolt is screwed through the plate and is additionally secured with a nut.
A hole is specially made in the lever for the locknut.
Also, the lower driven roller is attached to the bolt with a lock nut.
The electric motor is the last to be attached to the bed. It comes with two rubber dampers, if desired, you can also install them.
All is ready. By lowering the lever, you can put on the rollers sanding belt .
Before using for the first time, you need to check the freedom of rotation of the rollers with a tensioned belt, and correct the tilt angle of the roller with the adjusting screw. Fine tilt adjustment is performed after engine start.
