One of the popular marking devices often used in joinery is a surface gage.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Master Sh” will tell you how to make a combined marking gage, also capable of performing compass operations.
Materials necessary for homemade work.
– Steel square, plate
– Set of screws
– Self-adhesive measuring tape
– Super-glue 502, spray paint, sandpaper.
Tools used by the author.

– Semi-automatic core, tap holder, tap
– A set of files, a file, a vice.
So, as a planer body the master decided to use a thick steel plate, in which the holes had already been drilled.
Taking into account the position of one of the holes, the author cuts out a rectangular blank with dimensions of 40 × 50 mm. The hole is just in the middle of the part.
When cutting, try to make the edges so that the final part is a parallelepiped.
The resulting workpiece is fixed in a vice, and the edges are processed with a file. The corners are also slightly rounded.
Further, using machine oil, the hole is reamed to a diameter of 10 mm.
Now a few the difficult task of squaring the hole. The resulting planes must be parallel to the outer edges. The master copes with this with a square file.
As a result a 10 × 10 mm steel square guide must pass through this hole.
Then the sides of the block are sanded with sandpaper.
Now a thread for the m8 clamping screw is cut in the new hole.
Guide from the square bar is cut to the desired length. It is advisable to choose a flat section of the bar.
At the end of the guide, with a small offset from the edge, a through hole is drilled to install a scribe, marker, or pencil.
A hole is drilled in the same end face, and a thread for the clamping screw is cut with a tap .
From the bottom on the side of the case, you need to make one more, but already a blind hole for installing the compass needle.
Old broken taps will serve as material for the thorn and scraper.
The tap is fixed in the screwdriver's chuck, and its end is sharpened under a cone on a grinder with a sharpening disc.
To maintain the hardness of the metal, avoid overheating, especially the point itself, periodically cooling it with water.
The resulting thorn glued into the hole with second glue .
On the guide, the master marks the risks with a step of 10 mm. It will be a kind of scale.
Shallow cuts are made along the markings with a thin cutting disc.
After cleaning the edges of the slots with a file, the master applies a layer of spray paint.
After the paint has dried, the surface of the guide with risks is smoothed with sandpaper.
Of course, such a scale has low accuracy, and if you wish, you can simply stick such a self-adhesive measuring tape onto the guide.
Everything is ready, you can assemble the thickness gauge.
Of course, the author originally made this tool for working with metal (therefore the body is made of steel) – you can set a pencil for marking on the carpentry parts.
Replacing the pencil with a scribe, you can mark even on a rusty sheet of metal.
