DRDO-Ecolastic to launch biodegradable eco bags in AP, Telangana

Tirupati: In a bid to put an end to single-use plastic globally, the DRDO, in collaboration with Ecolastic Products Private Limited, has co-developed biodegradable and compostable bags, which are sustainable and commercially viable.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle over phone, DRDO Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) director M. Rama Manohar Babu disclosed that bio-compostable products, which are made from 100 percent plant-based food-grade materials, will soon be launched in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

“About 5 trillion single-use plastic bags are being used worldwide annually. Only one percent of them are being recycled. Further, over 381 million tonnes of plastic waste is being produced yearly, which will double by 2034. Though it is said that everything that comes from earth goes back to earth, it takes up to 1,000 years for plastic to decompose”, Manohar Babu pointed out.

At the World Environment Day summit in New Delhi, hosted by Government of India on June 5, 2018, Ministry of Environment Forests and Climate Change had made a solemn pledge that by 2022, the country will eliminate all single-use plastics. With this aim, the ASL director said, DRDO has collaborated with Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, and Ecolastic Products Private Limited, Hyderabad, to provide an eco-friendly solution.

“The bag is most sustainable and commercially viable alternative to single-use plastic. It is available in two types – water soluble and water-resistant bags”, he explained.
